Don’t Watch This If You Eat Figs… 🐝 Some Figs Have Dead Wasps Inside Of Them 🌱 Figs are pollinated by female wasps, and they’re not actually fruits but inverted flowers - so wasps crawl inside, lay eggs and fertilizes the flowers with pollen from other figs. The wasp eggs hatch into larvae and they feed on the interior of the fig before pupating and exiting the fig as adult wasps. I had no hope for my fig seeds but that’s clearly not the truth bc i kept these seeds for two years. and last week i opened my fig seeds to see some of the seeds sprouted. so i planted them in soil. Now it is worth mentioning that not all figs contain wasp larvae, especially those sold in the grocery store because figs can also be grown without pollination by wasps so they don’t contain any eggs. Even when a fig does contain wasp eggs or larvae, they are so small and microscopic that they are typically digested along with the rest of the fig's flesh when it is eaten. So, while the idea of wasps inside a fig might sound strange or unappetizing, it's actually a natural part of the fig's life cycle and doesn't usually have any impact on the fig's taste or nutritional value. It’s also so cool that figs are one of the oldest fruits in the world, being grown for over 5000 years and used widely in ancient medicine for coughs and sore throats and of course, in cuisine. Essas estruturas reprodutivas pertencem às plantas cosmopolitas do gênero Typha. Cosmopolita quer dizer que esse gênero é nativo de praticamente todos os lugares do planeta. Esses cilindros possuiam flores femininas e as masculinas estavam acima delas, na mesma haste. Após a fecundação, cada flor feminina se transforma em um fruto e milhares deles ficam prensados entre si, formando essa haste marrom. Quando a pressão é liberada, os frutos se espalham pelo ar, assim como acontece com os frutos do dente de leão. . A sensação é muito estranha, porque não pararam de sair da minha boca por muito tempo! Vários grudaram na minha barba e fizeram uma grande bagunça no meu jardim, cobrindo várias plantas. This glass enclosure is home made here at Herptime HQ, and fit for some of my favorite mainland species of anole! Its a prototype enclosure of a design I hope to be able to fine tune and build more of. The lizards going in here are going to be found near the forest floor, so the more terrestrial style of cage is fitting! They also don’t move around a great deal, so they’ll be perfectly happy and breeding in here! Lots of different tropical plants to give a bit of cover if they need, and some leaf litter so they can blend in. These lizards really are not all that quick and rely on their leaf like camouflage and motionlessness to keep themselves safe! They’re the blue lipped forest anole, or anolis bombiceps. I’ve got a trio in here, one of the females is not like the others! She’s bright red! Can’t wait to see what her babies may look like… in the mean time I have lots of eggs cookin from normal ones, just as amazing in my opinion. I Grew An Apple Orchard In My Backyard 🍎 I always wondered if it was easy to grow an apple orchard, so I made it happen. I spent 2 years turning my backyard into one. But I heard that when you plant apples from seed, not all of them will produce fruit identical to the original apple seed. So you might end up with apples you can’t actually eat. That’s why cutting a piece of the original tree and planting it in the ground is the preferred method of growing apple trees - but I didn’t believe that until I could see it with my own eyes. Well, that’s when the adventure began, and it all started with a honey crisp apple. So - next time you're enjoying a crisp, juicy apple, remember that the seeds inside have the potential to grow into a whole new apple tree, given the right conditions. Peeling the outer layer of skin off of apple seeds will help them germinate at a faster rate than leaving the skin on. 2. Apple seeds have the power to germinate inside of the apple itself. This is a process called “vivipary,” and this happens because the seeds inside the apple are surrounded by flesh, which provides them with moisture and nutrients to develop and grow. As the seeds begin to sprout, they can push through the apple's flesh, breaking through the skin and eventually growing into a new apple tree. 3. You can prompt vivpary to take place by leaving the apple out in a warm and moist environment for 24 hours, then placing it in the fridge for 48 hours, and you may just see sprouting seedlings inside of your apple. 4. Not all apple seeds will germinate successfully, and even those that do may not produce an apple tree that bears fruit identical to the original apple. This is because apple trees are often cross-pollinated, meaning the seeds may contain genetic material from other apple trees in the area. 5. There are pink-fleshed apples that exist. They are called ‘rose apples,” and they taste like strawberry lemonade. They are less acidic than regular apples. An Oregon farmer discovered the pink flesh after taking a bite out of one of the apples on his trees in the 60s, but it didn’t start to become commercially available until a few years ago! It’s a natural hybrid. 6. Ginkgo Trees are not in fact crab apples, but a tree that produces a nut! It’s one of the oldest tree species on earth and is often referred to as the ‘living fossil’ because it has remained relatively unchanged for millions of years.
