introducing… the disco panther bud vase!! 🪩 the iconic plaster mold for this piece was commercially made in the 60s, and after being in my arsenal for years, it tragically broke about a month after this piece was cast 😭 I always knew I wanted the panther to be fully disco’d, but had no idea it would take close to 40 hours to complete! The finished sculptures are gifted back to the 2nd grade students who drew the original monster and it can honestly be hard for some of my students to let go of their 3D creations but ultimately they understand that it's all for the younger kids! You’ll have to watch until the end to see the difference grinding the lid makes. This process comes around every few months, after firing a couple of times, once I’ve accumulated enough lidded wares. Then, each has its lid ground in place using Chemico lapping paste, (meant for engine valves), the excess removed, then the whole lot is washed thoroughly in hot soapy water. Even though I burnish my lids at the leather hard stage to a glassy smooth finish, once reduction fired, there’s always a certain amount of grog/texture, in the clay, that makes itself present again. The clay shrinks around these already fired particles, revealing them, and creating a rough surface, hence the awful noise the lid makes initially. Equally, if there’s any movement during the firing, this could cause one component to not quite fit with the other. Regardless, I make my lids tight on purpose, this way, once fired they can be ground into place like so, meaning they fit perfectly. A few notes: I only ever use this paste on bare clay, it never goes on the glaze. I wouldn’t recommend using it with terracotta, or a porous clay body, as the residue can be tricky to remove. When I’m working on a batch of lidded forms, I’ll apply the paste onto one lid, grind it, then take that same paste and spread it onto the next jar, and so on, and so forth. This way one tiny pot of the paste can last an age but it does eventually become less effective. It’s a satisfying, loud process, best done with headphones on and a good distraction to relieve the monotony. #asmr #satisfying #pottery #craft #teapot #ceramics

Most pottery experiences changes in temperature even with normal use (like pouring hot coffee into a room temperature mug). They’re meant to hold up to this kind of normal use. But sometimes I have to give my pottery a little encouragement to separate. It shouldn’t affect the integrity of the piece if done sparingly. I prefer to fire lids right next to their vessels, but with pieces like these incense holders it’s best to fire them together. #pottery #ceramics

You’ll have seen this process a number of times in my feed by now, but never narrated, like this. This is something I do to all the lidded forms I make, as even if the lids fit well once glazed, before they’ve been fired, after being reduction fired to 1290ºC, things can move, clay can warp and lids can often no longer fit as well as they did. Or, they simply sound terrible, the clay screeching as the two parts are twisted together. So, to fix this, I spread Chemico valve lapping paste onto the bare clay, (it’s never put on the glaze), and then the two pieces are ground together. It being greasy helps it stick onto the area I need to be sanded, and the carborundum does a great job of shaving away the parts of the rim, or lid, that were making it stick and scratch. It’s then washed thoroughly in warm soapy water and dried, and finally I’m met with a much smoother, more satisfying sound. #pottery #oddlysatisfying #asmr #craft #ceramics
