They usually start out with, “Tell me about a time when…” and are SUPER hard to answer if you aren’t prepared! ❌ Myth: if you’re on the cusp of the next tax bracket you shouldn’t accept a raise because you’ll be making less money. ✅ Fact: the US uses a progressive tax system, so you’ll never be making less when you’re making more. 🧍‍♂️You, your local 3rd grade teacher, and Oprah are all paying the same 10% on your first ~$10,000, the same 12% on your next ~$30,000, the same 22% on your next ~$50,000 and on and on. 🔝 So if you’re at the TOP of the 12% bracket, and you get a $5,000 raise that bumps you into the 22% bracket—you only have to pay 22% on that extra $5,000 (not your full income) 🤷🏼‍♀️ so, sure, your “tax bracket” might be 22% — but that doesn’t mean you’re paying 22% of your income to fed taxes. But before you fall in love with that 5% match, make sure to ask about when it becomes “fully vested” — aka, when the company contractually holds up its part of the bargain. There are three different types of vesting: 🤑 Immediate: when companies immediately match the 401k in full 🧗 Cliff: when the whole 401k is matched in one chunk after a waiting period 📈 Graded: when the 401k is matched gradually over time. ~28% of companies have immediate vesting. Ah, the “waiting to hear back about a job” black hole— such a hard place to be! Here’s my advice on how to take more control of this period: When the interview ends: ✅ Ask interviewer when you can expect to hear back about next steps ✅ Obtain/confirm their email so you can send a thank you note ⏰ 12-24 hours later 👉🏼📧 send follow-up thank you email 🗓️ Status update deadline (or if they didn’t give one, 2-3 weeks later of radio silence): send a check in email reiterating interest Polite, professional checkins show passion, focus, enthusiasm and interest. That’s all employers want! I can’t speak for everyone (obviously lol) but I’ve personally never hired a candidate who did not send a follow up email after the interview. 💪🏼 Showing initiative and drive is super appealing to employers! sometimes you’ll get asked a question and think, “wait I do not wanna answer that… do I have to??” ❌ If your answer to the question doesn’t directly relate to your ability to do the job, you do not have to answer. 🤷🏼‍♀️ MOST of the time, people may ask about kids/marital status/sexual orientation/etc. by accident—just trying to make small talk. ⚖️ But these are actually protected questions that you legally do not have to answer, as they can lead to illegal discrimination (or simply sub/conscious bias) 😠 SOMETIMES, though, interviewers know exactly what they’re doing. While they can’t ask about kids ~directly~ they might tell you about their “maternity leave policy” to gauge you 🤨 SO, if someone asks you a personal question — don’t jump to conclusions. Well, in reality, HR isn’t doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. Remember: it’s HR’s job to protect and advocate for the company (that’s who is paying their bills, not you). Yes, in some scenarios it can be mutually beneficial. And, in many cases, it can be a nifty workaround that allows companies to legally & financially protect themselves. Some helpful tips: Use the “trampoline” method. Don’t just answer, don’t just ask questions. Answer, comment, compliment, and then bounce it back to them! Don’t interrogate them. Ask 2-3 questions in a row, then take a break. A piece of common advice is ‘just ask people a ton of questions about themselves’ — which is great! People love talking about themselves. But don’t rail them with non-stop questions. Allow natural pauses for them to ask questions, too (they might not tho lol) Positive body language. Did you know research shows that 65% of our communication comes through body language? So remember to stand tall on both two feet. Smile, nod your head, use your eyebrows and gestures.
