I’m both proud and impressed with Aubrin Sage’s determination to get to the very top of this mountain even though it required using a unique lift she had never used before and was clearly nervous about. #fatherdaughter #raisingdaughters So much of her confidence and resilience here came from our new and incredibly supportive friends we are visiting (@Robbie Franklin) who hyped her up but also provided a back-up plan incase someone fell: “Coconut” was their code word to yell if you fell so the others knew to let go and return to the bottom to try again. It was truly inspiring to observe their “Nobody reaches the top unless we ALL reach the top” mentality. #weridetogether 💪 • • • T-bars feel like a right of passage for skiing and snowboarding and are the most difficult lift style to use, especially for snowboarders. While their implementation at ski resorts has faded in recent memory in favor of the more familiar chair-lift (which is more beginner friendly and easier to use than these surface drag lifts) T-bars are still used around the world to access some of the highest and most advanced terrain because they remain the most cost effective and low maintenance lift option to take people uphill so it’s great to eventually become familiar with them in order to broaden your terrain access opportunities. #snowboarding

My job is not to push progression but to cultivate a mindset that allows our children to push their own boundaries at their own pace. This was the day that Aubrin Sage decided she was capable of going fast. We were riding a new-to-us portion of @Banff Sunshine Village and were still learning the trails. We were sitting on top of a steeper portion that flattened out at the bottom and I said ‘crush it’ knowing that it would be no problem for her to work her way down it but I did not expect her to point it and straight line down it (with proper edge control of course). These are the moments you just sit back and hope that the little lessons and reminders and prep work over the years have been digested and will be applied as needed. • • • She may seem fearless but one of my favorite things about A.Sage is that she is rather cautious and calculated in her approach to everything. I think being fearless is a result of not fully understand the situation or the consequences of your actions. I also think fear plays an incredibly important role in self preservation and having a healthy relationship with and management of fear is what’s important. Knowing that A.sage is very analytical and calculated allows me to trust her that when she’s ready, she’s READY. That’s a powerful feeling and belief at just 6 years old. #kidsarecapable

I just had the best day of the season so far riding with our daughter. #fatherdaughter #raisingdaughters As a storm picked up I decided to pick her up a bit early from forest school and head up to the mountain on a rare 1:00 pm till close shred session. The snow was good, the storm was raging and vibes were unusually giddy. Something seemed to align and we fed off each others energy and stoke. She rode with unprecedented confidence, creativity and joy. It was a milestone afternoon I’ll never forget. After 3 pow runs I asked if she was ready for a lodge break and she declined. After 5 runs I was cold and feeling a bit beat up (I’m battling some lingering muscle strains) and voiced the option to call it a day. She responded with ‘let’s see how we feel after the next one’ which is a very mature way of saying ‘no’ via delay tactic. On our 7th or 8th ride up the lift I glanced at my phone and it was already 3:45 and it was clear we were going to shut the mountain down. Every year there’s a moment or day a snowboard that stands out brighter than all of the rest. Two years ago on a frigid and icy night-ride session I watched her finally commit to the daunting toe edge turn and begin effortlessly linking S-turns. Last year I watched her ride waste deep pow on an unforgettably light April 2nd pow-day and now this midweek afternoon storm riding session will leave a lasting impression on me as well. I wish days like this could last forever. Yesterday’s video was from this day as well and I’ll be sharing more video moments soon as I try to share what is tough to articulate with words. ❤️

“Shouldn’t they be in school?” An old man quipped as he slowed his pace in front of me booting up two young kids in the lodge on a Wednesday morning. “They’re only 3 and 6 years old, it feels a touch early to toss them inside a box 5 days a week.” I quipped. “Ehh they should be in school..” he grumbled in stubbornness upon his departure. • • • I hope our kids remember and appreciate all I pour into them but even if they don’t I am proud of our efforts to provide a well rounded, joyful childhood while cultivating valuable attributes that will help prepare them for all of life’s ups and downs. The truth is, we don’t yet know what our future will look like and while we may lack ‘school’ currently, there is certainly no lack of education. …and yeah, it is ‘so hard but so fun’ taking two young snowboarders out on the slopes. It’s never easy but it’s always worth it. 💛 #stayoutsidedad

“Let’s never do that again…”😅 I’m offering up this behind-the-scenes sufferfest reel for perspective when you see us riding powder. Snowboarding powder is like surfing water but with even less friction. Speed is a must to stay a float otherwise…you’ll be swimming. It can be very and after a few situations like this there is also always that lingering thought in the back of your mind that if you go down, THIS is the consequence. The stakes can be high, especially with tiny kids and this is the dad-ication not often seen in our reels because pulling out the camera is the last thing in my mind during a good sufferfest but if there was any doubt that snowboarding with young kids takes a lot of work, hopefully this squashes it! #StillAlwaysWorthIt #StayOutsideDad

This is six. ❤️ This dance is for all of you who went with your interest in, or passion for riding sideways rather than the omnipresent advice to ‘start them on skis’ because it’s easier. Thanks to all of you I have seen more tiny kids on snowboards this year than ever before! Sliding on snow is an incredible feeling and floating sideways is an amazing way to experience it. The future looks bright and I’d like to think we share a glimpse into it right here in our little corner of the internet. There’s also a whole lot more going on than learning how to snowboard. We’re cultivating important life long traits including confidence, resilience, perseverance and critical thinking that are guaranteed to be valuable to our children’s future no matter what they choose to do.
