Rollo was one of the most successful Vikings in history and through him every cutrebt European monarch is descended. For years Rollo and his men plundered through Francia. Instability and infighting amongst the Franks allowed Rollo to largely go unckecked- Rollo was able to grow his army with new recruits and the riches continued to pour in. Until in 911 AD Rollo atrempted to lay seige on Paris and then later in the year a place called Chatres. On July 20, 911 they were met in battle and defeated. The King in West Francia at the time, Charles the Simple- was at a crossroads. Rollo had been raiding since he was 15 years old, now around 50 he was powerful, tried, true and seasoned. Charles decided he would make a deal with Rollo. He would have to pledge allegiance to Charles and help defend the land against other Vikings and in return he would get land. There was one further caveat: Rollo and his entire army had to convert to Christianity. Rollo the Viking warrior was baptized and became Robert, Count of Rouen and the Ruler of Normandy. Rollo lived a long life and could possibly have been around 60 or older when he died. He is buried in Rouen Cathedral in Normandy, France. #vikings #rollo #vikingtok #viking #historytime #ragnarlothbrok #historytok #assasinscreed

Many know the Mighty Bamburgh Castle from The Last Kingdom. In the mid-15th century, England was torn apart by a power struggle known as the Wars of the Roses. Two houses, Lancaster and York, vied for the throne, leading to a series of conflicts that would change the course of history. On the 25 of June 1464 Richard Neville, the Kingmaker, laid siege to Bamburgh castle. After 9 months the castle surrendered. With Bamburgh’s fall, Lancastrian power in Northumberland collapsed. And the 9 month siege marked the first time an English castle had ever fallen to cannon fire, signaling a new era in warfare and the decline of castle fortifications. #tlk #warsoftheroses #thelastkingdom #GoT #historynerd #historytime #history #historytok #castle #historybuff #whiteprincess

Mary Queen of Scot’s son King James VI, was kidnapped and taken captive when he 16 years old for 10 months. One of the ringleaders of this kidnapping was the 2nd Earl of Gowrie. After James escaped and was old enough to reign as King in his own right, The Earl was promptly executed and James never trusted the Gowrie family again. Some years later the Earls Two sons were suspiciously killed while supposedly trying to kidnap the king again and possibly kill him. Well, At least that’s What King James said. What would become known as The Gowrie conspiracy is one of the great unsolved mysteries of Scottish history. David Murray, who owned this castle- Balvaird Castle, helped King James dispose of the Gowries. Or was it that David helped save the King’s life? Whichever it was David was rewarded for his service and promptly took Gowrie’s previous post. #maryqueenofscots #jamesvi #jamesi #history #unsolvedmysteries #historymystery #castle #historynerd #historytime #historybuff #maryandgeorge #maryandgeorgeseries #scottishhistory

There hadn’t been a high King in Ireland for over a hundred years, not since the Normans had invaded Ireland. Enter Robert the Bruce…Robert and Edward Bruce’s cousin Dough-null O’Neill was the king of Tir Owen and area in the north of Ireland and he had been having quite a lot of issues with the Richard de Burgh who was the Earl of Ulster. Richard just happened to be Robert the Bruces father in law. Richard’s daughter Elizabeth was Robert’s second wife. Doughnull decided to ask Robert for help to fight the Anglo-Norman lords in an attempt to get their land back. Robert the Bruce and his brother Edward claimed a long and distinguished line of royal Irish ancestory. And so a plan was made for Robert’s brother to invade Ireland In exchange for Doughnall and his allies to support Edward Bruce’s bid to become High King. And in so doing Ireland, would be used as a second front for Scotland to defeat the English. Robert would be King of the Scots and Edward would be High King of Ireland. Edward de Brus landed in Ireland with 6000 men in May 26, 1315. They eventually came to Carrickfergus and Edward was able to take the town and the castle. Three and a half years after Edward had originally landed in Ireland, his campaign came to a bloody end. On October 14, 1318 Edward died in battle along with many of of the most important men in The Bruce’s’ army. #robertthebruce #castle #historytok #medievaltiktok #northernireland #historynerd #historybuff #historylesson #edwardbruce #irishhistory #scottishhistory #northernireland

In the remnants of St. Mary’s Church in East Somerton, a solitary oak tree rises from the ground, its roots entwined with the stones of the ancient nave. This tree, has become known as the Witch’s Leg, and a haunting legend has sprung up to explain the trees origin. The story has stuck and endured through the ages. The legend tells of a time when the fear of magic and witchcraft were at its peak during the late 1500s and early 1600s in England. It was during this period that a woman, who had a wooden leg, met a horrific fate. Often the targets of the witch trials were older women who had bad reputations for various reasons in the towns and villages they lived in. Sometimes these women would be accused of casting spells on cattle and livestock. The story goes that she was buried alive within the confines of St. Mary’s Church. It was believed that she cursed the church as she died and from her wooden leg, a tree began to grow. Over time, this tree expanded, its roots delving deep and wide, causing the church to fall into ruin. The oak tree, now standing amidst the ruins, is said to hold the spirit of the woman. There is a belief that if you were to circle the tree three times, it would release her spirit. Yet, the tree remains undisturbed, its story a whisper among the leaves, a silent testament to the past. The truth of how the tree came to be is as elusive as the rustling of leaves in a forgotten forest. #witchtok #history #historytime #legends #historybuff #witchesoftiktok #storytime #placestogouk #historymystery
