This practice has never been about growing my forearms, or any aesthetic goals for that matter. The sole reason I started this practice was to resolve my joint pain and build enough strength to be able to train and live the way I want. That’s it. A whole year of training with no injuries is the most impressive thing l've ever done. Injuries may not be 100% avoidable, but l've definitely found a way to reduce my chances substantially. I used to get injured pretty frequently and factored it into my training. I was practicing and even teaching calisthenics for years before I started walking on my hands every day. Regressing to exercises I didn’t even use when I was starting out felt like too big of a step back. I didn’t want to accept that I couldn’t do the things I used to. Eventually pain stopped me in my tracks. I was desperate for anything that would get me back to training and living. My priorities changed quickly. Instead of being able to train the way I used to, I just wanted to be able to train without hurting. Even if it meant doing way less, I needed to be able to do something. I figured out the only thing I could do without pain was holding a plank (on my knees) and a little shifting. I started there. Eventually I noticed I could shift more, and even pick my knees up. Before long I could move around. I could crawl. That’s was the something I needed, and a practice was born. I thought if I could do this every day and not be in pain, I’d be happy. Anything else would be a bonus. After a few short months I’d regained most of my ability, but without the chronic nagging pain. Now a few years later, my skills and abilities have far surpassed what they ever were before starting this practice. I needed this foundation to build something that would last. u’d probably be surprised to see how many comments and messages I get from people telling me I could easily achieve the same results if just lifted weights instead. Personally I don’t understand this logic because as far as I know, nobody has learned to walk on their hands by just lifting weights. Nonetheless, it seems to irritate many people to see me training different than how they’re used to. I bet if they experienced the results I have they’d see things different.
