nuggets announcement is...... She's a mom!! 🐧🐧 We are THRILLED to announce that Nugget and Freddy’s chick is doing amazing in our nursery. It is gaining weight and eating as it should. It’s even started to move around and loves to talk to its keepers.  This chick is a momentous step for Tanganyika as well as African Penguins in general. On November 4th, the same day this chick hatched, African Penguins became the first (and hopefully last) species of penguin to be classified as critically endangered. That means that there are less than 20,000 individuals left in their native habitat, which is a 93% decline in the past 70 years.  Zoos like Tanganyika play a crucial role in African Penguin conservation. Not only do we keep genetic lines strong and diverse but we also educate people about how important species such as these are. Tanganyika works with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust to help support Penguins and other animals in their native habitat so hopefully this incredible species will still be around for future generations to learn about and fall in love with, just like we did.  #africanpenguins #nugget #tanganyika #tanganyikawildlifepark #cute #penguin #babypenguin
