Get your tomato season going to a great start by growing the healthiest seedlings. Start with sourcing out your seeds and seed starting medium. We love using equal parts of coco coir and worm castings because they can retain water really well and ensure the seeds get the moisture needed to start germinating. Use a clear cover and place in a warm spot. Use a heat mat if needed. The cover and warm temperature will create a humid environment, ideal for seeds to germinate. Remove the cover when seeds have sprouted. Using a grow light can make a big difference. When seedlings have sprouted, they can be placed under a grow light for a minimum of 12 hours per day. Don’t overwater, allow the soil to dry a little bit before watering and when you do, water from the bottom tray. Up pot to a bigger container when seedlings show 2-4 true leaves. We use vegetable soil mix which contains perlite and mycorrhizae. This helps with root development. We also pre-soak the medium before transplanting to avoid shock and wilting. Also by doing this, we don’t have to water for a while. Maintain good light exposure. If you don’t notice growth after the seedlings have been potted up, you can add a small amount of liquid fertilizer like fish emulsion. #tomato #gardeningtips #learning #fypシ

Here and now… All of us have the seed of mindfulness in us. We are aware and mindful of what surrounds us. It only takes a slow deep breath to make your body + mind come together, where you will suddenly find yourself fully present. We are not distracted by worries when we’re in the garden, we only hear the sound of the harvest, rain, birds and wind. Take the time to appreciate what surrounds you. We start seeding our tomatoes around March, we are in zone5b. The timing for starting tomato seeds is often determined by the last frost date in your area. As a general rule, start your tomato seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the expected last frost date. You can also search for a planting calendar online that is more specific to your area. SEED STARTING MEDIUM: Coco coir is produced from the husk of coconuts. On its own it does not contain any nutrients. So when the seedlings start to grow you will need to apply liquid fertilizer. To avoid this, mix coco coir with worm castings or compost. 1:1 ratio Seed starting mix is also a good option, it will have everything you need. UP-POTTING & GROWING INDOORS For the best growth, use a grow light or a sunny window with about 6-8 hours of daylight. Seedlings can be up-potted when 2-4 true leaves appear. True leaves are the second set of leaves that appear after the initial seed leaves. The pot size we use is about four to six inches. INDOOR TO OUTDOOR TRANSITION: Whenever you’re growing indoor plants and are introducing them into the outdoor elements, the plants need to be hardened. This process will slowly acclimate the plants to the outdoor environment. Start by placing the seedlings outdoors when it’s free from frost. 1-2 days in full shade Another 1-2 either morning or late afternoon sun Then 1-2 afternoon sun. Afterwards, they can be transplanted into their final spot. By doing this, it will reduce leaf burn and strengthen your tomato plants. Water tomatoes consistently, and fertilize monthly with compost. We use a handful of organic chicken manure because it is high in calcium and we never have blossom end rot on our tomatoes. TOMATO COMPANIONS: To keep deter unwanted pests and attract pollinators, plant these near your tomatoes. Garlic, Onions, Basil and French Marigold #gardentok #gardeningtips

#ad When we lived in an apartment we didn’t have a yard to compost. Tons of our food waste would go into a compostable bag and straight to the landfill. Now having a place to compost in the garden, it would still take some time for organic waste to completely break down and we are limited to composting only leaves and stems. Vitamix Eco5 not only reduces food waste in an indoor space, but it also speeds up the decomposition process in our compost bin. With this machine we are able to significantly reduce the volume of our waste without having to use a compost bag or directing our waste into the landfill. the bonus that we are able to recycle this waste into a nutrient rich organic soil additive to grow our food every year. We wish I knew how important this step was when I first started growing from seeds indoors. We must admit, the first time we grew tomatoes indoors, we directly exposed the plants to the outdoor sun, they didn’t make it. Lesson learned, and we found out about an important step called “Plant Hardening” There are many steps to do this, some even recommend to expose your plants for only an hour for the first day. But it can be time consuming to keep moving plants inside and outside each day. Eventually, we ended up using a tarp and changed our process. Instead of constantly moving the plant, we kept them in one spot and placed a tarp over them. This saved us time and only brought the plants inside if there is an unexpected frost warning. This process takes about a week but worth it to keep your plants healthy before they can be planted in their final spot. This works for any plants grown indoors and needs to be transplanted outdoors. Just make sure to do this process when the weather is warm and safe from frost. Days 1-2 Keep the plants under full shade Days 3-4 Expose the plants under morning or late afternoon sun. Sun rays during these times are not as strong. Day 5 Check to see how the plants are transitioning, such as signs of sun burn. If it needs more time, continue to expose only to morning and afternoon shade. If the plant is looking greener, then start exposing to full sun. Days 6-7 Expose the plants under full sun. Water well during this process and open air helps them adjust much faster. After this process, they can now be transplanted in their final spot. #fypシ #gardentok #garden

#ad There are ways to grow food inside your home and @Spider Farmer LED grow tent is one of them. Using a grow tent and grow light to start a garden indoors has its many advantages. For instance, you have control of the environment. You can set the humidity, temperature and amount of light your plants receive. If you have tried growing indoors and haven’t had much success, a good quality grow light can help. For our setup, we have been using the Spider Farmer SF600 and the plants love them. It’s great for all plant stages from seedlings to flowering and fruiting stages. As for the tent, the size we’re using is 8x8 and we got it as a full kit that included the fan, vent and grow lights. This is a very spacious tent and is ideal for growing any type of plants, even tropical plants. Technique to growing hundreds of vegetables in a single bed. You can maximize your yield by planting varieties together and using season extenders like row covers. In early Spring, always start with cool loving crops like spinach, radish, cabbage, and lettuce. Then by the time you harvest, you can plant your summer crops in the same bed like cucumbers, squash, tomatoes and peppers. It’s one way you can grow more for in less space💚😊 #gardening #garden #homegrown #gardentok

Get a head start on your garden and extend your growing season. The best way to do this is to start early in Spring and grow cool loving vegetables like radish, spinach, lettuce, kale, bok choy, turnip, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, arugula, peas, onions, and swiss chard. Some of these do need to be started indoors as early as February. However there are some that you can directly sow in the ground. We start planting outdoors early April as soon as the ground can be worked on or when the soil temperature is right around 7°C (45°F) and up. A row cover can help keep the soil warm and protect your seedlings. Here’s a list of seeds that you can plant directly in soil. - Radish - Spinach - Lettuce - Turnip - Arugula - Carrots - Peas What seeds have you started? #fypシ #gardeningtips #learning #gardening #daily #gardentok

Growcery Time🪴 There are some plants from the supermarket produce aisle that you can grow. If you do choose to grow these, pick organic! All you need to do is soak them in cold water, change the water often until they sprout. Once they do sprout, you can transplant them in soil. If it’s too cold outside, keep it indoors under a grow light or near a bright sunny window. When the weather starts to warm up, slowly introduce them into the outdoor environtment. #grow #homegrown #gardeningtips #learning #gardening #tipsandtricks #daily #fypシ

Why save eggshells and add them to your garden beds? Adding powdered eggshells to garden beds can provide several benefits for plants. They are rich in calcium carbonate, which is an essential nutrient for plants. They also contain other nutrients like magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and organic matter. These nutrients can contribute to the overall fertility of the soil and support plant growth. Eggshells can also help prevent blossom-end rot, a common condition in tomatoes caused by calcium deficiency. In order for eggshells to provide these benefits, they need to be ground into a fine powder before adding them to the soil. This allows for better decomposition and nutrient release. It may take several months for the eggshells to break down and be absorbed by the plant roots, so it’s recommended to till them into the soil in the fall or very early in Spring. You can also mix the powder into your compost bin. If you have a worm composter, eggshell powder helps the worms break down organic materials much faster. #gardenideas #gardeningtips #garden #gardentok

#ad If you haven’t grown indoors yet, you may come across some advice that will tell you that you need sun and bees to grow your food. But in places like Canada, our winter makes this impossible. We are glad that there are alternatives like grow tents and grow lights that make it possible to grow food during winter seasons. Growing food indoors gives you control with temperature, humidity, and light exposure. For example, the Spider Farmer SF600 grow light can emit broadband full spectrum light, 660-665nm(RED), 730-740nm(IR, 2800K-3000K (WARM-WHITE), 4800-5000K(BLUE), which has a significant impact on plant germination, flowering, fruiting, chlorophyll synthesis of plants, and photosynthesis. For fruiting plants, hand pollination can replicate the way the bees pollinate flowers. When it comes to nutrients, you can grow your plants in soil or in hydroponics using organic or homemade nutrients to feed your plants. Another advantage is there is a lesser risk of pests and diseases that outdoor plants may be exposed to, providing a more controlled environment. You can also maximize your space by setting up vertical growing systems that can accommodate a variety of plants in a limited area. We just need to understand what our plants require, so that we can provide them with the necessary environment and nutrients to grow healthy and strong. So, if you ever want to grow your own food indoors, we just want you to know that it’s very much possible!! #ad Every mistake is an opportunity to learn. I seriously didn’t know that not all roses do well in containers and that they can’t establish the best roots with soil containing granular fertilizer. Thanks to expert growers from @heirloomroses I finally learned to grow roses properly in containers. Here’s what went right! 1- Choose the right variety specific for containers and to my zone. We went with a fragrant and continual blooming rose bush called Mister Lincoln. This variety is great for zones 5-10. 2- Avoid using potting soil mix that contains granular fertilizer. Granular fertilizer isn’t ideal for transitioning rose plants, it can get hot and burn the roots especially for containers. 3- Container size. 10 gal containers will give the rose plants a good buffer/insolation for roots. 4- Drainage, use soil with a high organic content and good drainage. Containers need to have good drainage as well. 5- Refine watering practices, the watering needs of roses are much different than a lot of other plants. 6- Using proper fertilizer. Water insoluble nutrients paired with high microbial nutrients are best at the start for own root roses. Try liquid fish fertilizer. If you’re looking for the best roses to grow specific to your garden, check out the Heirloom Roses link in our bio. They have hundreds of varieties to choose from. #garden #gardening #flowers #gardeningtips #containergarden #roses

Every year we have some type of mint growing in the garden because it’s an amazing herb and also great at keeping some unwanted pest away. They are easy to grow and maintain, grows in most soil type, and will do well in full sun or shade. From experience we find mint grows the healthiest looking under partial shade. It’s also important to note that mint can grow and spread vigorously when planted in ground so avoid planting this in your garden beds. Best to keep them in containers. #mint #gardeningtips #knowledge #learning

If there’s any garden space left, I will find a way to fill it! When we updated the inside of our greenhouse with 2 new raised beds, it left some empty spots in the back area. Seeing this, I just had to build something to make use of the vertical space. This table is narrow and ideal for seed starting trays or small containers. It’s always so amazing how much space you can create just by going vertical. #gardendiy #gardenproject #greenhouseideas #gardenideas #handmade #diyprojects

Wasabi is one of the most expensive crops in the world. The plant can only be grown in very specific environments. In Japan, the wasabi plant grows naturally in areas that have mountain river valleys, where it can grow along the river stream beds. This is why a lot of people outside of Japan, including myself, have never actually tasted real wasabi before. Somehow we are managing to grow it in our backyard. We find that it best grows under shade and we are excited because it’s looking like we will be able to get a good harvest this year. Can’t wait to try the real thing! #realwasabi #wasabi #gardening #backyardgarden #fypシ
