Not only do we have years of education, most of us also have years of direct patient experience under our belt 😊 I have worked in a Latine community for 7 years now and have many so many hardworking people with diabetes, heart diseases, eating disorders, and more. 7 years of being a dietitian taught me: 1. Everyone is different and dietary needs will vary for everyone! I need to learn all about you before I can make any nutrition recommendations. 2. Never judge a person based on their appearance or their weight. NEVER ever compliment weight loss unless you know for sure it was healthy. You do not know what they are going through! 3. Nutrition myths and misinformation is EVERYWHERE. Don’t believe everything you hear, especially on social media. 4. Health exists at every size. Body size/weight does not determine how healthy we are. 5. Mexican food and ANY cultural foods can be healthy and balanced. 👏🏽 6. Carbs are essential, even more those with diabetes! It can be hard to rewire our brains but the first step is to remember that everyone is ✨different✨ and people of all sizes can be healthy! When you find yourself judging others for their appearance, ask yourself why.… and is it really their health you’re concerned about? Or are your own insecurities getting to you? 🫶🏽More about the BMI scale: The BMI scale was created in the mid 1800’s by a mathematician, with no medical experience. He collected his date primarily from WHITE EUROPEAN MEN and created the weight-to-height expectations based on his preference and only this population — not considering health. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that life insurance companies began to use it to charge higher premiums to bigger people. 💰💵 BMI is comprised of a weight-to-height ratio, which has been used as a metric of (inaccurate) health. Unfortunately, this metric doesn't consider any other influences, such as bone density, body composition, muscle mass, body fat percentage, sex and racial differences, and other environmental and biological influences. Two people with the same BMI could have very different body compositions and health statuses!
