My father’s visiting me from my home country of Pakistan, after 8 years (!!!) of not seeing him! He’s also an interventional cardiologist, and I followed in his footsteps. I had the pleasure of showing him around my hospital, introducing him to my amazing colleagues, showing him the cath labs, and taking him through one of my recent heart stent procedures (he even quizzed me on my technique and thought process 🤣). He’s been doing these procedures for 30 years, albeit in a different environment. Surreal moment for me. Dr. and Dr. Panhwar. I have humble beginnings, and we never had money. Still, my parents gave up all their own comforts in life, and fought against all odds, to put their kids through school, and the biggest reason I am where I am in life now is because of them. Everything I know about resilience, determination and grit is because of my folks. Moving to the United States after having grown up my entire life in a “third world country” was one of the hardest challenges of my life. As a kid, my life now was not just unimaginable, I didn’t even know that something like this could exist! It’s not that I didn’t dream about it. I didn’t even know I *could* dream about it. That gives you a lot of perspective in life, and the daily problems we face. Makes me proud and humble to share my success with them now and show them what they have achieved. I remind myself daily to never forget where I came from. This is the classic immigrant doctor story. I moved to the US to be able to become the best doctor I could be, provide world class medical and cardiovascular care to underserved communities, and to also take care of my family - I am now able to do all that. It meant a lot of sacrifice - haven’t seen my family in 8 years, or been home in that time. Many other immigrant doctors are the same, and immigrant doctors like myself are proud to provide essential healthcare to millions of underserved Americans. Immigration is what makes America great! I hit 600,000 followers on TikTok today, after just 3 years of public health education, heart disease awareness and misinformation debunking. What an incredible HONOR to be trusted by so many people around the world - many of whom I will never meet. Public service and heart disease prevention is a passion of mine, and even if I can help ONE person get the care they need, my job is done. It has never been about financial gain for me - I have never done a sponsored post accepting money. I hope I have impact not only on the people who watch my videos but also their communities who learn through them! That impact pales in comparison to the fulfillment I get for DOING GOOD THINGS for people. NOTHING tops the prayers and good karma you get from public service. Everyone deserves high quality healthcare regardless of race, religion, socioeconomic status, insurance status, educational level, etc. But sadly the healthcare system fails the most vulnerable in our society. I cannot change the system, but I can hopefully educate people to empower them to advocate for themselves and their loved ones. The many messages of thanks I get are all the reward I need. I may not be able to see people in my own clinic if they live elsewhere, but I have lost count of the trusted cardiologists I have found for people to see that I would send my own family to. For me, the goal has always been to simplify scary heart disease related topics in a way that people understand, while make it relaxed like they are watching a friend instead of a stuffy dressed up doctor in a white coat in a hospital. Even if it is just to provide reassurance or to empower people to keep pushing for answers. This is the power of a platform like TikTok that is used by 170 million Americans. I have not found that kind of success anywhere else, including Instagram. Most of my videos take me 5-10 minutes to record, in my car or in my office. No fancy make up, no fancy lighting. No fancy editing effects. Just the information in an easy to understand way. I am just getting started. Thank you all for the support!
