We couldn’t find any trustable source of info about these mosaics, however right by that wall, a marble inscription states that is an ancient Roman marble (we cannot say with certainty which building it belonged to) #rome #rometravel #rometours #rometourguide #romeitaly #whatitalyis #rometravelers #romeitalytravel #romethingstodo #romeplaces #romerightnow #rometraveltips #romesecrets #romeviews #hiddengems
When the church of San Nicola in Carcere was built in the 1100s, it incorporated three Ancient Roman temples from the 3rd century BC! These temples were: Temple of Spes, Temple of Juno, Temple of Janus. The church was built on top of the basements of these temples, which you can see outside the church, as well as inside. If you walk underground you will see the ancient Roman street level between the temples, and the actual basements of the temples! Imagine the ancient Roman people walking right there! 🤯 When the church was built, this underground section became a cemetery. That is why you can find some human bones too. What’s the story behind this statue? ⤵️ This was the statue that the emperor Constantine made for the basilica of Massentius in the Roman Forum. It was a giant statue (12meters high/39 feet!) and the only fragments that made it to this day are exhibited in the Capitoline museum: the head, arm, knee, the feet.. So how are we looking at this whole statue today? Everything started from those fragments. The rest of the statue is lost, but it was digitally reconstructed based on those fragments and a deep study around them. This project came to this beautiful result thanks to the collaboration of @sovrintendenzacapitolina (Rome Cultural Heritage Department), @fondazioneprada and @factumarte. You can now see from up close this incredible statue just walking in the courtyard of Villa Caffarelli 🤩 Are you going to see this? This was a nightmare for Michelangelo.. Here’s why ⤵️ When Julius II become pope, he asked Michelangelo to make his pyramidal mausoleum on top of St Peter’s tomb, in St Peter’s basilica. Michelangelo set on a journey to Carrara, to personally choose the right blocks of marble.. In the meantime Julius II changed his mind. He wanted Michelangelo to work at the Sistine chapel. And by the way, his tomb should go against a wall, and not a pyramid anymore.. The Pope was much more focused on the constructions works of the new basilica of St Peter, and the ambitious plans he had for this tomb, were no longer a priority. At some point Julius II died, Michelangelo moved to Florence, and the making of the tomb was interrupted, even though Michelangelo already sculpted some of the statues. One of them was the Moses. Some years later, the heirs of Julius II complained to Michelangelo that the job was never delivered. In the meantime there was no longer space in St Peter’s basilica to host this tomb, as originally planned. And so, with the mediation of the Pope of the time, Paul III, Michelangelo completed the monument. But in a different location, this church: San Pietro in Vincoli. What’s this place? ⤵️ This is the church of Santa Prassede and, among the many beautiful things you can find in it, the chapel of San Zenone is what struck us the most the first time we went there. A chapel dedicated by a Pope, Pasquale I, to his mother Theodora. When you enter, you need to insert a €1 coin to turn the lights on. And we really recommend you to do so because the light is just incredible when you turn everything on. What’s this place? ⤵️ Palazzo Altemps is a place you definitely must visit if you want to go beyond the main landmarks of Rome What is the story (in brief) of Palazzo Altemps? The palace was built in the 1400s by the nephew of pope Sixtus IV (the pope that made the Sistine chapel!) A hundred years later the palace was bought by an Austrian cardinal, called Marco Sittico Altemps, and that’s where the name of this place comes from: Palazzo Altemps He also decorated this palace with beautiful frescoes and chose this as the location for his collection of antiquities and books To make the long story short, the palace changed property over the years, until in 1982 it became property of the Italian State, and it was eventually turned into the beautiful museum that we can see today Palazzo Altemps houses some of the most incredible ancient sculptures, not only from the Altemps collection but also coming from other noble families, such as the Boncompagni Ludovisi and Mattei ⤵️ Want to discover more of Rome with us? Entering this little church is something special.. 🧡 It is so simple and raw, that you truly feel the spirituality in the air. Much more than in bigger and majestic churches, which sometimes feel like museums. This tiny church is very ancient. It is believed that the first church was built in the 500s! Then “newer” layers were added on top, like the Cosmati floors from the 1100s 😊 Things get even more spiritual where you get to see the very cella where St Benedict loved during his time in Rome. It is a small confined place, which was part of the ancient Roman house where this church was built on. Have you ever noticed this little church? Its bell is the most ancient in town, and also the smallest (only 45cm of diameter! 😍) #rome #rometravel #rometours #rometourguide #romeitaly #whatitalyis #rometravelers #romeitalytravel #romethingstodo #romeplaces #romerightnow #rometraveltips #romesecrets #romeviews #hiddengems

Save the dates ⤵️ The arch of light happens only few days per year, in April 6,7, 8 and September 4,5, 6. And only for a few minutes, at 1PM! The light effects in the Pantheon were a way for the emperor to prove how powerful he was, as he could even be in control of the sun! Seeing this in person is pure magic ✨ Make sure you save these dates in the calendar if you’re going to be in Rome! #rome #rometravel #rometours #rometourguide #romeitaly #whatitalyis #rometravelers #romeitalytravel #romethingstodo #romeplaces #romerightnow #rometraveltips #romesecrets #romeviews #hiddengems

Only open few days per year. But at least now you now what’s behind it! 😉 This is the Fontanone of the Gianicolo, built in the 1600s by Pope Paul V of the Borghese family. He wanted to celebrate the renovation of the ancient Roman aqueduct of Trajan, so he built this beautiful fountain on the Janiculum hill. This is one of the most beautiful panoramic points of view over the city.. But if you go behind the fountain the view gets even better! 😉 Behind the Fontanone in fact there is the so-called “Secret Garden” which is usually closed to visitors, except from very few days a year!
