Sometimes you have to wait on nature. This species of nudibranch is easy to spot on docks, especially in summer when there is plentiful plankton in the water for them to feed on. Don’t try and sniff them while they are underwater, but if you come across one out of the water, take a whiff and youll drfinitely notice the artificial watermelon bubble gum smell they emit. #nudibranch #hoodednudibranch #salishsea #dockfouling #jerisichdock #gigharbor #visitgigharborwa #visitgigharbor #seagull
Day time low tides are coming soon and that means lots of eggs on the beach. Squid eggs are some of the largest eggs that you might encounter during low tide. #squideggs #salishsea #pugetsound #visitgigharborwa #lowtide #intertidal #visitgigharbor #pnw #wildlife
Daytime low tides will be heres soon! Heres a clip from last July. The low tides near Port Angeles are earlier in the day than the Gig Harbor area so often that means driving 2 hours in the dark to get there before the tide is fully out. It’s totally worth it. #tidepool #salishsea #lowtide #intertidal #portofseattle #anemone #crab #marinesanctuary #marinepreserve
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a clam? The moon snail, Neverita lewisii, uses a radula to lick its way into clam shells. #salishsea #lowtide #intertidal #pugetsound #moonsnail
This was such an amaxing find! Skates are similar to sting rays, but have scaly skin, no venemous barb, and are found in cokder water. @#salishsea #portofseattle #lowtide #pugetsound #foxisland
Thanks to Kate from Fox Island for sharing about this washed up Giant Pacific Octopus. Male GPOs often wash up like this after mating. Females will tend the eggs intil they hatch and then they too perish. #gpo #octopus #salishsea #wa #visitgigharborwa #foxisland #gigharbor #beach #giantpacificoctopus
It’s pronounced gooey duck, not geo-duck. And yes, they are that big and yes, the often flop out like that during low tide. #geoduck #clam #salishsea #lowtide #intertidalzone #purdysandspit #portofseattle #pugetsound #eelgrass
Ok, its even better in reverse. Still no crabs seen here though! #decoratorcrab #salishsea #lowtide #intertidal #pnw #camouflague #wildlife #tacoma #visitgigharborwa #marinebiology #portofseattle #crabtok
These tiny crab larvae, called zoea, are barely bigger than a grain of sand but will mature into a crab thats capable of snapping a pencil with their massive claws.
Replying to @foreverparks666 these teeth let them bite into tough kelp holdfasts. When they population gets unbalanced (usually from lack of predators) sea urchins can wipe out entire kelp forests, creating urchin barrens. #kelp #seaurchin #salishsea #tidepool #intertidal #lowtide #echinoderm #marinebiology #portofseattle
Meet the frosted Nudibranch, Dirona albolineata. These gorgeous nudibranchs, aka sea slugs are a favorite find in the Salish Sea. You shouldnt touch them, not because they can harm you, but because when threatened they dislodge the cerata along their backs, rather like a lizard shedding its tail. #salishsea #lowtide #intertidal #tidepool #portofseattle
Can you hear the delight in my voice? Encountering an endangered animal is always special and I was so lucky to come across this one. Come learn more about abalones and restoration effort at our Cocktails & Fishtales speaker series event @Ocean5 in Gig Harbor on September 11, 2024!
Limpet rescue! These interesting mollusks are often held captive by sea urchins. #tidepool #limpet #keyholelimpet #seaurchin #lowtide #intertidal #portofseattle #wildliferescue
Replying to @Bethany grey skies makes for lots of glare on the water. I often use my body to block it and must assume what I call the “naturalist pose.” It results in lots of accidental selfies. #tidepool #lowtide #salishsea #intertidal #pnw #portofseattle #accidentalselfie
#onthisday I love looking back at past posts because it gets me excited for the low tide season coming up. Heart Cockles dont bury like other clams. Instead, they kick their way to safety when a predator tries to make a meal out of them. #clam #salishsea #cockle #seastar #starfish #mottledstar #portofseattle
