Ribbon 1, Ballpoint pen Initially designed for writing, ballpoint pens can offer a wide range of values if used correctly, making them a solid and reliable drawing tool. The viscosity of its ink and the solid bearing ball at the tip of its nib provide a smooth and steady ink flow, that is crucial for shading, when coupled with the right technique. Patience and meticulousness are required if an artist wants to achieve a smooth and homogeneous shade. Cross hatching is the technique that allows the most freedom for this medium. Multiple layers of lines that slowly build up all the values needed. Spacing, thickness and pressure are the constants that make or break a layer. If done right, the result gives a velvety effect with no visible lines. The paper is very important as it is the support, but not only: it allows (or not) the smoothness. The roughness of the paper needs to be subtle enough to look soft, but just textured enough to break down each line, giving the final image an almost stippling-like effect. Just like any medium and technique, the more polished you want your piece to be, the more time you will have to spend at the desk. Ballpoint pen is one of those extremely time consuming mediums that need you to stay focused for long periods of time. It is an excellent way to teach oneself patience, consistency, rigor and perseverance. If you feel like you're up for the challenge and needed to find a new medium to tame and to up your rendering skills, then look no further than ballpoint pen. I personally rate it a 5/5 on my difficulty scale. One of the most rewarding techniques I've practiced, so the efforts are well worth it. Once your pressure control and layering understanding is mastered, it gives you freedom in pretty much everything else. Note that ballpoint pen gets as difficult as you want it to be. You're of course free to be less demanding, these are just my observations and conclusions after using this medium for a few years based on my standards and expectations :)
