Adam felt overwhelmed and had difficulty regulating himself while shopping for baju raya at @Inhanna . It took us an hour just to convince him to try on a baju Melayu. It's not that he doesn't want to wear it, but he was struggling to process the information. One effective method to prevent meltdowns among autistic individuals at a store is to provide them with a social story before shopping. Unfortunately, we didn't have the opportunity to do so as we were pressed for time. Thank goodness the workers at the store were accomodating and understanding. We brought Adam to get a haircut at his normal joint, Super Style hair saloon in Summit USJ. Everything was going well until…. That's what I always worry about when bringing Adam to events or anywhere in public because he can go from super calm to feeling anxious in a split second for no particular reason. Yes, for us normal folks, we wonder why and what made his mood suddenly change. Only he himself will really know what triggered him. The most unexpected irrelevant thing for us may be a stimulus that causes an Autistic person to have a sudden sensory overload attack. What, why, and how vary for each individual on the spectrum. Pagi raya hari ke-5 yang mencabar. I was downstairs when I suddenly heard the sound of Adam hitting the wall. It’s pretty common, so I casually walked up to his room. He was in the shower and his left hand was holding onto his bleeding right wrist. Blood was gushing down, and I thought, Ya Allah, please don’t let this be a serious cut. When I saw the wound, about 6-7 cm long across his wrist, I immediately wrapped a towel around it to apply pressure trying to stop the bleeding. Mommy then rinsed the cut wound with saline water and bandaged it tightly before we took him to the hospital. A quick decision had to be made, should we go to a government hospital where he will be treated for free or to a private one and be paying an arm and a leg because Adam has no medical insurance. In Malaysia, there are no medical insurance options available for people with Autism. But because I knew Adam doesn’t have the capacity to endure the long wait normally at a government hospital, I decided on taking him to emergency KPJ Damansara. The MO, nurses at KPJ were brilliantly fast and friendly. Dr. Robert was gentle and really warm. They made Adam stay calm. Alhamdulillah, the x-ray showed it was possible to do an outpatient procedure immediately. Adam got 8 stitches. Everything was settled within a couple of hours. Dr. Roberts was kind enough to give us a discount on his consultation and procedure. Still, the bill came up to RM2400. If only government hospitals had better SOP to expedite treatment for Autistic people. Something the health ministry can look into. #autism #autismawareness #autismfriendly #autisme

Our wonderful neighbor gave us some chicken potato curry for iftar to go with roti jala. Adam finished all the curry on his own (without rice/roti jala). It’s one of those episodes where he suddenly has this super craving. It happens once in a while not always. So we cut him some slack and just went along. It was simply heart warming and a joy to see him enjoy the curry. We can eat curry next day. #adamsautismfamily #autismawareness #autismawarenessmonth #theautismdiaries
