one day you’ll be 26 and ask yourself “hey why don’t you do a dance competition” and you can’t think of a good reason not to 🙃 seriously though it’s been 8 years since I’ve last danced on a competition stage and it was so worth it! I learned so much to help both me as a dancer and my students, read more below 👇🏻 🪩 spacing a solo routine on a stage you’ve never danced on before is HARD. Every single performance I’ve had in the past 8 years I’ve had at least a dress rehearsal on the stage. Competitions don’t have dress rehearsals! So much of my brain power during the actual performance was going towards making sure I didn’t run out of space and fall off the edge into the orchestra pit 🙃 I always wondered why my students didn’t use more of the stage but now I know why. 🪩 I still get nervous and that makes me hesitate. This is something that I’ve also seen with my students, steps that they can dance perfectly fine in the studio they seem to fumble on stage. I always assumed it was a lack of plié (but when we watched the tapes my students get to a deep plié just fine). Now after dancing on the comp stage myself I see it’s the hesitation at the bottom of the plié that is causing us (both my students and I) to loose momentum to get up on to the toe. The lesson here is don’t hesitate just because you are nervous🩰 🪩 I didn’t do nearly as bad as I thought I did, both as a personal opinion and from a score standpoint. I wasn’t as prepared as I wanted to be for this comp, with my busy life of other things taking over, but for the most part the technique and artistry that I strive for in class showed up on stage. ✨If you stay ready you don’t have to get ready. ✨ Overall I was a little hesitant to compete as an “adult”. It’s very uncommon and I’ve heard too many rude comments from other competition goers. But I enjoyed the experience way more than I thought I would, I had a lot of fun, and I learned so much that will help me as a teacher. Plus it really motivated me to work on a variation that I’ve always wanted to perform. Thanks to the ultimate. dance connection for having me 😊 Who knows, maybe next year there will be someone else in my category 😅 #adultballet #ballettok #balletperformance #queenofthedryads #donquixoteballet #enpointe #tutu #balletdancer

Replying to @SS Professional dancers, when do you ever wear turners/twylas/halfsoles? maybe it happens but ive never seen it on a professional stage, even in contemporary ive only every seen dancers in ballet shoes or barefoot. But if they were barefoot they were not doing very many turns. Also i feel like twylas are just a poorly designed shoe. We need the friction of a jazz shoe but more streamline. #controversialdancecompetitionopinion #dancecompetition #dancecompetitionseason #competitivedance #danceteacher #dancestudio

@jamie this doesn’t really answer your question but thank you for starting your discussion i think it is really important. As to your question, why are we seeing so much jazz that is “walk walk trick walk walk walk trick” i worry that it is a lack of dance history education. I am not sure if the average competitive dancer is ever taught the history of jazz. Its not something that was ever mentioned or emphaised as important while i was training. I think with more education as to how jazz came to be we could see more interesting integration of traditional elements of jazz with the “tricks” of the 2020s. #danceteacher #jazzdance #whathappenedtojazz #danceteachersoftiktok #competitivedance #dancemoms
