Anniversaries of grief are always hard… Today marks 11 years since my eyes looked at this beautiful world for the last time. Time feels like it’s flown by but in some ways the moment that it happened feels like yesterday. Grief doesn’t swallow me whole like it used to. As you guys know, I love being blind, I’ve worked hard to be able to say that sentence but I’m so proud of my journey. I love my sense of self now but I clear my calendar every anniversary to make sure I take some time for myself to remember the day that changed my life forever. All of the good and all of the bad because I am blessed. I allow myself to grieve what sighted lucy thought I would become and celebrate the confident kick ass blind woman I am now. Grief is so complicated but to all of you that are also grieving like me today I hope my words comfort you, even if it’s just in a small way. Also, it’s very fitting that my book Blind Not Broken is out in a few days time jampacked full of exercises and things to help you out on your journey. Along with the parts of my grief story that I’ve never chatted about online that have been too painful to tell before. Guiding my blind wife through central London with lots of luggage 😱 This is the reality of our journey! Honestly so happy with our new organised pantry!! The amount of things I was losing over the past few months was driving me mad. I had nothing Braille labelled. I was asking Ollie to help me get things out and I finally felt like enough was enough. My dad, Ollie and Mum helped me get to work labelling everything and building @IKEAUK shelving. Quite an inexpensive solution for such a big problem of inaccessibility that was weighing on my mind for too long. Don’t compare yourself… easier said than done but honestly the moment that I didn’t have to look at other people’s profiles, because of my sight loss, made me feel free. Trust me that I feel more like my authentic self so if you’re feeling really sad that someone else looks a certain way that you don’t or judging yourself against unrealistic beauty standards remember that it’s probably just a filter that they’re using and most things that you see on social media aren’t real. Filters are so realistic these days!
