It is a partnership borne not out of convenience nor of expediency, but as a natural progression of a deepening relation and robust cooperation amongst our three countries linked by a profound respect for democracy, good governance and the rule of law,” President Marcos Jr. states in his opening remarks. He notes that the Summit is just the beginning. “Facing the complex challenges of our time requires concerted efforts on everyone’s part. A dedication to a common purpose and an unwavering commitment to the rules-based international order. This is a meeting that looks ahead. As we deepen our ties and enhance our coordination, we seek to identify ways of growing our economies and making them more resilient, climate-proofing our cities and our societies, sustaining our development progress and forging a peaceful world for the next generation,” the Philippine Chief Executive emphasizes. For his part, U.S. President Joseph Biden describes the Summit as a “new era of partnership” with the coming together of three allies, three proud democracies and steadfast partners – representing half a billion people – “to building an Indo-Pacific that is free, open, prosperous and secure for all.” “I want to be clear. The United States defense commitments to Japan and to the Philippines are ironclad. They are ironclad. As I said before, any attack on Philippine aircraft, vessels or armed forces in South China Sea will invoke our Mutual Defense Treaty,” President Biden stresses. The U.S. President enumerates a few key areas that the three nations will discuss to further deepen ties, such as technology and clean energy, securing the semiconductor supply chain, expanding telecommunications in the Philippines, maritime and security ties, and launching of an economic corridor in the Philippines as part of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment. This is the first corridor in the Indo-Pacific that will bring more jobs for people across the entire region, as well as more investments on sectors critical to the future, ports, railroads, agriculture and much more. “Today’s Summit is an opportunity to define the future that we want and how we intend to achieve it. “Ang tagumpay na ito ay nagpapatunay sa determinasyon ng inyong pamahalaan upang tulungan ang ating mga magsasaka at palakasin ang sektor ng agrikultura,” President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stressed as he reaffirmed the Administration’s Bagong Pilipinas commitment to bolster agricultural development in the country during the inauguration of the Malitubog-Maridagao Irrigation Stage II (MMIP-II) in Pikit, Cotabato. In his remarks, the President underscored the PhP5.133 billion MMIP-II as a testament of the government’s collective efforts in building not just a mere agricultural project but a major infrastructure for peace and development. “Ang tubig ng irigasyon na ito ay hindi lang bubuhay sa ating pananim. Ito rin ang didilig sa kapayapaan na ating binubuhay, sa demokrasyang ating pinapalago. Ang patubig na ito ay hindi lang magpapalaki ng ani ng palay, mais at gulay. Ito rin ay inaasahang magbubunga ng matamis na pag-unlad na matitikman ng lahat,” he conveyed. “This irrigation would water not only the crops we grow, but the peace that we want to take root in this land. Because peace and freedom must be tended and watered as well,” the President added. The MMIP-II covers a total agricultural land area of 9,528 hectares in the Provinces of North Cotabato and Maguindanao Del Sur. It is projected to cater to more than 4,000 farmers in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as El Niño continues to impact the agriculture sector. Once operational, the projected harvest from the project is around 110 cavans of rice per hectare, which is equivalent to an average of 1 billion production value annually. President Marcos Jr. commended the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) for this accomplishment and urged the Agency to remain steadfast in its commitment to ensure the realization of all agricultural projects in the Region. Likewise, he encouraged the beneficiaries to continuously support and maintain the MMIP-II, noting that there are more upcoming projects for the benefit of the BARMM. “Marami pa pong serbisyo ang ilalaan upang maitaas ang antas ng pamumuhay ng ating mga kababayan, lalo na ang mga nasa BARMM.
