The Observer newspaper on Sunday, April 27, reported that Conservative party staff and activists created and secretly operated a number of Facebook groups that been filled with racism, misinformation and endorsements of criminal damage. Members of the Conservative party, Conservative staff members, and even the London Mayoral candidate Susan Hall are allegedly members of these groups, according to the report. Labour MP Catherine West raised the article during Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Questions (May 1), asking Mr Sunak: “Will he close down these Facebooks, which have been begun by Conservative members of staff? And will he investigate the role of the current candidate and her membership of those disgraceful, racist Facebooks?” The Prime Minister replied that “the election tomorrow will be fought on the substance of the issues that Londoners face”. #PMQs #UKNews #UKpolitics #Conservative #Conservatives #Labour #Tory #Tories #SusanHall #LocalElections #LondonMayor #Mayoralelection #Londonelections #Facebook #Facebookgroups #SadiqKhan #RishiSunak #catherinewes

A man has been jailed for stealing a woman’s car while her blind 89-year-old mother was still inside. David Stephenson was found guilty of kidnap, theft of motor vehicle, dangerous driving and driving without a license. On Saturday 6 January 2024, Greater Manchester Police received a panicked call from the daughter of an 89-year-old woman whose car had been stolen… with her mother in it. As it was January, she had left the engine running to keep the heating on in the car to keep her elderly mother warm for 10 minutes while she went into the shops. Stephenson, not phased by the fact a vulnerable elderly woman was in the passenger seat, got in the car and drove off. Specialist officers from the Roads Policing Unit were immediately notified, and due to the risk posed to the passenger, a pursuit was authorised. Thankfully, police were able to bring the car to a safe stop, detain Stephenson, and reunite the victim with her daughter. Chief Inspector Matt Jackson from the Specialist Operations said: “This must have been really terrifying for the woman who was in the passenger seat when the car got stolen. She is blind and has dementia, she wouldn’t have known what was going on – I can’t even begin to imagine what was going through her mind. “I am proud of my officers, whose fast thinking and ability to remain calm in any given situation, meant we were able to bring the vehicle to a safe stop, and swiftly arrest Stephenson. “Their response meant that the woman was safety reunited with her daughter, it could have ended very differently if we didn’t work the way we did to get her back safe.” #uk #uknews #ukpolice #carchase #policechase #manchester #dashcam #999 #policecar

A man who fired a gun at a group of rivals in a busy Tottenham street has been convicted of firearms offences. Ricardo Anderson, 21, was convicted of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of ammunition with intent to endanger life and attempted grievous bodily harm. Investigating officer Detective Constable Rhiain John said: “This incident took place in a busy street, on a warm summer’s evening where people were out and shops were open. Terrified onlookers including children sought refuge in shops and scrambled for safety behind parked cars. “Ricardo Anderson had absolutely no concern for them at all. But for sheer luck this could have been a murder investigation." The court heard that at 20:00hrs on 27 May 2023, a blue R-Type VW Golf sped along Park Lane, N17 before coming to an abrupt stop in the middle of the road. A man wearing a balaclava was seen pulling a firearm from his waistband, which he then fired wildly towards the vehicle. An occupant of the vehicle also had a gun and attempted to fire back but the weapon jammed. Police began examining CCTV and found that only around half an hour earlier a group had been congregating in the area to film a music video. One man was captured wearing a distinctive blue North Face tracksuit, black trainers, and a balaclava. He would be the man later seen firing at the car. CCTV footage from a nearby shop captured the same man without his face covered, allowing officers to identify him as Ricardo Anderson. He was arrested on 31 May and charged on 1 June 2023. He will be sentenced on Wednesday, 22 May. The vehicle involved was later traced and found to have been stolen. Despite extensive enquiries the occupants were not identified. #UKNews #London #Metpolice #police #CCTV #Convicted #court #crimenews #crimenewsuk #crimestories #News

Rishi Sunak has insisted a top Tory donor’s “remorse should be accepted” as he resisted calls to hand back £10 million in a racism row. The Prime Minister was challenged by Sir Keir Starmer to return donations to Frank Hester, the Conservative backer alleged to have said Diane Abbott, Britain’s longest-serving black MP, made him “want to hate all black women” and that she “should be shot”. The Labour leader asked Mr Sunak whether he was “proud to be bankrolled by someone using racist and misogynistic language”. #pmqs #politics #ukpolitics #tory #conservative #conservatives #rishisunak #labour #keirstarmer #frankhester #news #uknews #dianeabbott #newsroday #torydonor
