One of the most counter productive measures for addressing depression is looking at the individual in isolation. Throwback to old mate Abraham’s Lincoln and his “how do I know I wouldn’t be the same under similar circumstances”…. By running with the assumption that it is dirty water that’s creating a sick fish, and not a fish somehow choosing to be sick (who TF would choose that)… AND taking a peek into the toolkit of human experience and seeing what environments might better serve that individual … we see a puzzle looking for the right pieces, not a lost cause. For me I know nature makes me feel better, which should be enough in itself, but for the data peeps - type “grounding” into google scholar and you’ll get a parasympathetic nervous system / neurotoxin clean out buffet. But so too genuine, nourishing, trusting relationships. And this is where the therapist comes in as a fractal of mankind. That a person unconditionally accepts you? Validates your experience? Shares the cheat codes to self directed calm and coming home to one self? Wow. It’s possible, and BAM hope returns … Hope is an amazing tonic to depression, as compassion is to shame and anger is to anxiety.
