He nearly got away! Thankfully the team managed to secure the seal before he made it to the water. Who knows, it could have been his last chance, the fishing line had already started cutting the flesh of the animal. Have you wondered why we do not use drones in our rescues? Well, we do make use of drones. Primarily for surveying colonies and assessing extremely technical rescues but locating an entangled seal which was spotted by the drone is just as difficult as using our regular spotting equipment. Due to current local laws, it is extremely hard to get the appropriate permits for posting content produced from drones. #ocn #oceanconservationnamibia #sealrescue #animalrescue

Of course the animal is scared and fighting the rescuer. Who wouldn't be scared when netted and pinned down, but it is necessary to cut him free from the death trap around his neck. Why don't we ever put medicine on the wound? We have been advised by leading pinniped specialists that, unless we can keep the animal in a sanctuary for rehabilitation, we should avoid applying medicines to their wounds. Topical creams and ointments would wash off as soon as the fur seal goes in the water, while water-resistant sprays may lock in bacteria and aggravate their injuries. We see healthy recaptures every single day, proof that seawater acts as a very efficient wound cleaner and that Cape fur seals are extremely resilient animals. #ocn #Sealrescue #animalrescue #oceanconservationnamibia

Seal Saved From Fishing Line This little one likely feels so much better after the fishing line was removed. It unfortunately left a nasty cut, but we're positive the salt water will help clean and heal the wound in no time. There are a number of seals that reside at the local harbour. Often they get entangled in the rubbish floating in the water. The team didn't have an easy time securing the seal, but finally they got to cut the strap from the animal's body! We visit the local harbour about twice per week to make sure there are no entanglements. The rescuers acted swiftly on this mission as the entanglement had begun to fester. None of the other seals who scattered were injured. These creatures are incredibly resilient.
