I had just moved to London with my manager. I remember being really stressed because I had no money and not a lot to look forward to. I’d always been lucky in my life with opportunity’s arising, but after a certain point when I hit 25 years old they stopped coming in. Reality set in and I wondered if I’d messed up my life. Each year that passed felt more like a repeat of the last one, monotonous and boring. I felt like the excitement of my old life was leaving… The excitement of not knowing the answers was replaced with knowing what was going to happen. I started losing that light in my soul. I caught train up to this small town called Hitchin 1 hour north of London as I’d been writing songs and had a studio session that day. I went into the studio and my life completely changed. The song that came out was in a bizarre structure unlike anything I’d done before, I didn’t really understand chords or song structure that well back then and I’m glad I didn’t because what came out was very unique. “I watched my wild youth disappear infront of my eyes” I remember being so unsure of myself back when I wrote this. I knew deep down it hit some universal truth. I remember it was freezing as I jumped back on the train, I sat down and put my headphones in and listened back to my rough recording of the song. I messaged it to my brother and manager saying “I think I have something special here”. Waves was the first song that I released. I knew it had to be. To hear how many people have interpreted the meaning in their own way taught me so much and meant so much. Here it is, the song that gave me a life after i felt like i’d lost it #lyrics #sad #waves

5 years ago today I released an album that changed my life called “a place we knew”. I put it together over a couple years as mostly while touring. One of those songs was “be alright”. I didn’t really fully know what kind of artist I wanted to be back then, and I pieced the album together, and tried throwing everything at the wall and seeing what worked and felt right. Now looking back I think there is so much creativity in not exactly knowing where the line was. This album gave me you guys, it gave me a place in the world, it has let me tour the world for the past 5 years. I’m writing this from Virginia right now, as I listen to the final mixes on my 3rd album. I can’t believe how far I’ve come and that I can still do this and you guys are with me… And part of the reason I’m so excited is because I feel like I’m finally back at that place I was when I wrote this album, excited and throwing things at the wall again to see what sticks. I think this 3rd album will be my best since the first. Thankyou for anyone who has stuck with me for these years!! Time for the true story about how this came about (since its blowing up on this app and so many of you were asking 😭); Ruth and i had never met, but our managers booked a studio in the hills of bel air in los angeles! She was coming over to sing a duet for a different song i’d written called “the last bit of us” but when she arrived we spoke for about 30 minutes and she had just gotten out of a relationship that was so fresh. I pulled out my guitar and we started writing this song about her life; where she was now and what she had been through. I felt shivers when she sung out the words “i dont sing, cause you’re still broken”… i felt that deeply. I dont know if people realise how deep that line is for her. I couldn’t believe she almost given up doing what she loved!!! I wrote my verse from the other perspective, listening to what she had been through, i tried to embody the other side. When we finished 4 hours later the song was done. We put it out and then all of sudden its started to go viral!! Im so happy its found its audience x ruth is such a genuine person, and a true artist who isnt intersted in fame just creating real art.
