What they don’t tell you about FIFO ✈️💰 Although there are financial benefits that FIFO provide, no one sheds light on the mental, spiritual and physical toll that it takes on you as an individual. Physically 🫶: Working 12hr shifts for 7-21 days straight isn’t normal and so it takes a while for individuals to get a hang of it. If you are not getting your nutrition/ sleep/ hydration/ rest all balanced and done correctly then the effects of these long days will start to arise. Be mindful of this when you are venturing into FIFO. Mentally 🧠 : You are alone for a long period of time, isolated from loved ones, partners, kids and friends. For those that desire community and connection this can take a toll on your mind. The biggest thing that I struggle with is missing my families milestones like birthdays, weddings and worse, funerals. Due to the nature of the rosters you won’t always be available to attend these important events. Remember your ‘WHY’ and this will guide you through these tough times. Spiritually🫀I’ve grown up around the ocean and bush, so being stuck out in the desert is very abnormal for me. It has taken me a little bit to adjust to a different climate which isn’t as colourful as home. If you’re someone who desires that spiritual connection with the land and sea as I do, try your best to see the beauty in this whenua(land) and appreciate it for what it is. Pro tip - everyone out working FIFO is mostly likely struggling with one of these 3 aspects or even a combination, so to help that. Smile and be nice to everyone because you don’t know what they’re going through 😃 #fifo
