When is a motorcycle tire worn out? Wear bars, wear indicators. There’s allot that would render a motorcycle tire unfit for service. Today I talk *briefly* on tire wear bars/ wear indicators. I could got on in much more detail, had to cut out allot to make the video under 1 minute. This is just a basic guideline. Some tire manufacturers may have their own rules about wear, this is a generality. Hope this helps someone, thanks for watching! #motorcycle #mechanic #diy #suzuki #dirtbike #supermoto #racing #engine #yamaha #kawasaki #honda #ducati #ducativ4 #s1000rr #kawasakininja #kawasakih2 #yamahar6 #yamahar1 #ktm #motogp #motocross #gsxr

Honda CRF300L Big Bore Kit Install This was done over two different days. Not because it took long, but because the camshafts had damage. The seller replaced them no questions asked The rest of the install went smoothly. Bike fired right up. Incase you’re wondering why it cranked a bit more before starting: Sometimes when doing work on the top end or fuel system, it can take a bit more turning over to get it fired up initially. After that, it started as normal. He texted me after a 60km ride, said it stalled a couple times when returning to idle. So we’ll have to look into it and figure it out. He said some others are having issues with spark, so replacing the leads seems to clear the issue. That’s it for today, thanks for watching! #motorcycle #mechanic #diy #suzuki #dirtbike #supermoto #racing #engine #yamaha #kawasaki #honda #ducati #ducativ4 #s1000rr #kawasakininja #kawasakih2 #yamahar6 #yamahar1 #ktm #motogp #motocross #gsxr #motorcyclevibes #crf300 #hondadirtbike #1000cc

Honda Valkyrie (basically a Goldwing Streetfighter) Tire Change Busy with bikes right now. Gotta figure out how to get videos out more consistently. Anyways, this bike got a tire change front/ rear. And of course a balance. Will go over balancing in another video. I’m trying to keep these short so I can upload to a few different places. As big as these bikes are, most basic maintenance is pretty straight forward. Tires, fluids, valves. Some stuff is a real pain. Air filter replacement immediately comes to mind. Valkeyries are ight, Goldwings however, not my cup of tea Thanks for watching! #motorcycle #mechanic #diy #suzuki #dirtbike #supermoto #racing #engine #yamaha #kawasaki #honda #ducati #ducativ4 #s1000rr #kawasakininja #kawasakih2 #yamahar6 #yamahar1 #ktm #motogp #motocross #gsxr #motorcyclevibes

Supermoto cylinder head install Over the last few months I’ve been slowly working on this DRZ engine. It took so long because I’ve had a few other project that needed to get done first. Also thanks to our Canadian weather, I wasn’t in too much of a rush. Now that spring is right around the corner, I gotta get this finished quick. The spring rush has already hit. People are getting their bikes ready and the schedule is full. Good times. What is the best motorcycle oil? Nowadays there’s so many different types of bikes, types of riders, types of uses, and types of oils that there is no one oil that is perfect for everything. That being said, you don’t need to do a ton of research to find a good working oil for your bike. BUT if you want something *perfect* for your exact application, there’s more to it. This might sound obvious to many people. Fortunately modern motorcycle oils are so good that for *general* use for *most* bikes, it’s hard to pick an oil that will actually be truly *bad* for your bike. Certifications for modern motorcycle oils make it tough to create and sell a bad oil. That being said. Just because an oil is good, and will work, doesn’t mean it’s *perfect* for your exact application. There’s allot to consider. Here are a few things to think about: What kind of bike do you have? What are you using the bike for? Commuting? Touring? Racing? On or off road? A combination? What environment are you riding in? How often do you change oil? Here’s a *hypothetical* scenario: Two 2010 Gsxr 1000’s Bike 1. Owned by a 50 year old guy in the UK. Commutes on the bike. Rides in all types of weather, goes for joyrides on the weekends but not too crazy. 10000-15000KM/ year. Budget calls for 2-3 oil change a year. Bike 2. Track day bike in Texas. Mid 30’s. Ambient temperature is hot (Texas). 8-10 track days a season. No budget for bike parts.
Both cases, Motul 7100 10W40 would work great. But the perfect oil may be different. Bike 1, maybe a semi synthetic oil would be more optimal (motul 5100, motorex cross power). Maybe a 10w30 would be better? Bike 2. Maybe 300v or motorex power synth. Maybe 10w40, 20w40, 15w50. This is a hypothetical scenario I just made up. But hopefully it illustrates that even for identical bikes, different oils might be preferred. Hope this helps. Supermoto Engine LUBE Now it’s time to put the cheap supermoto engine back together. Cases are already back together, this video is all the tedious bits. TBH it’s tedious to me, it may not be to others. I find the cylinders, pistons, head, timing etc more exciting. ANYWAYS. Last video I got a comment asking where the grease was. Truth is, almost everything in the engine has some sort of lubricant on it. Wether that be engine oil, assembly lube, some kind of grease, chances are there’s LUBE on it. It just doesn’t make it to video most of the time. I get a sneaking suspicion that ya’ll don’t want to watch me lubricating various things. One more thing to note: different parts require different kinds of LUBEEEE. Some oil, some assembly lube, some grease. Kawasaki 636 engine disassembly A friend is building his 636 for the track. Unfortunately it had low compression. Needs a top end. We figured, why not rebuild the whole thing? So he’s rebuilding the whole thing. I helped him drop the engine (he did all the prep work). Then he disassembled the engine down to the cases. Needed a bit of help splitting the cases, so I came over and supervised. Now I need to measure some parts, and make a parts order. The easy option is order a rebuild kit from Athena or something. Unfortunately they’re on backorder for months. So I’m going to make a parts list with individual parts. Yamaha R6 Silicone Cooling Hoses Customer wanted to service his cooling system. This R6 got a new thermostat, water pump, cooling hoses. And new tires. He went with Pirelli supercorsa’s. Great tire, one of my personal favourites actually. Anyways, silicone is advantageous over traditional hoses because it withstands higher temperatures and pressures. But like with everything, with advantages there are also disadvantages. Silicone has a tendency to cut easier, and it permeates coolant easier. So if you replace your cooling hoses with silicone, you’ll just need to inspect it more often, and top your fluid up more often. Silicone hoses also don’t bond to the metal, which makes future removal/ servicing easier than rubber. There’s lots more to it, this is a quick 1 min video. How do motorcycle chains wear? Here’s two common reasons that a motorcycle chain would wear/ fail. Either case, the pins get compromised. Sometimes you’ll see damaged/ missing orings. Sometimes not. Obviously there’s more ways a chain will wear, get damaged/ or otherwise be unfit for service, these are just two common ways, and what it looks like. This is also a quick 1 min video, its tough to get absolutely everything in one minute. Chains are wear items. Eventually every chain will fail, but with proper maintenance chain life can be greatly increased. R1 Rusty Chain and Sprocket Replacement 2003 R1. Did this for a customer last week. Will be returning soon, he needed a few other things. The pin at the end is what they tend to look like at the end of their life. Dry/ dirty chains don't seal well, despite what the forums say. I've seen this on countless chains. Chains will wear out no matter what you do, but the service life can be greatly prolonged with regular maintenance. "Cheap" Supermoto first start Engine freshly rebuilt. I got this bike for cheap because the engine was done. Done as in, piston, cylinder, head, were destroyed. So I rebuilt it with all new bearings, seals, big bore kit, new head, cams. And all the external parts were cerakoted. Hardware was polished. Engine gets reinstalled, hooked up. Fresh oil, spark plug, filters, coolant (not shown in video) Yoshimura slip on, because why not? Now it starts/ runs, and runs well. Still need to do some suspension work, and I need to put fresh tires on, but for now thanks for watching! #motorcycle #mechanic #diy #suzuki #dirtbike #supermoto #racing #engine #yamaha #kawasaki #honda #ducati #ducativ4 #s1000rr #kawasakininja #kawasakih2 #yamahar6 #yamahar1 #ktm #motogp #motocross #gsxr

Quick Aprilia V4 Valve Adjustment (RSV4 and Tuono) This bike is owned by another mechanic. He is comfortable disassembling/ reassembling the bodywork/ airbox. He’s just not familiar with the Aprilia V4’s. So all I was doing is the valves. The exhaust valves were tight. All intakes in spec. The front cylinders were adjusted off camera. Mostly because it’s tight in there, and it’d be tough to get decent footage. So all the footage here is the rear cylinders. Anyways. I said it’s not complex. It’s not. Tedious, definitely, but not complex. Special tools are required, but they can be purchased online. Obviously there's a bit more to it than this, this is a short. CBR600RR valve clearance check 1/2 Part 2 out tomorrow. The bike is finished already. Just had a hard time putting everything into a 1 minute video. Anyways, this bike had just under 24000km. The owner just picked up the bike recently and he wanted to make sure the valves were good. The bike was overall in really good shape. Chain had a few tight spots, but everything else was good. Valves were in spec, and the numbers were all consistent. No adjustment needed. Cheap Supermoto Rear Shock Rebuild (with some fancy go fast bits) This came off my DRZ. This bike was cheap because the engine was destroyed. I rebuilt the engine over the winter, and it now runs like a dream. Before I ride, I want to upgrade the suspension. So I rebuilt the shock with a gold valve, and a (much) heavier spring. Plus the old seal was leaking, so there’s that. Don’t be offended by the use of the word magic. It was a bit of a joke, and serves a purpose (trying to keep the videos under 1 min, so they can be posted to multiple places). Also… Yes this is nitrogen charged. Again, tryina keep the videos short. Quick ZX10R Oil Change I also talk briefly about oil colour. There’s more than one way to determine oil health. Most common way is by mileage. *Most* people would be fine changing their oil on a set mileage schedule or once a season. I really gotta stop talking about oil. Comments get wild. BMW S1000RR Valve Check All valves were in spec with this particular bike. This bike is a 2011 BMW S1000RR with approximately 30K kms. If there was no adjustment needed, what’s the point of checking? Simple. We don’t know if the valves need adjusting if we don’t check. There’s also allot of other work that goes into checking. I like to replace the gaskets, spark plugs, filters, fluids, etc. Also I got into the habit of cleaning the removed parts. They get dusty after riding.
