🚨 #Haiti crisis update. Violence is spiralling in the capital Port-au-Prince, leading to widespread displacement, with thousands of people fleeing their homes and finding shelter in schools, churches and health centres. Escalating armed violence is hindering access and agricultural production, disrupting markets and trade and complicating the delivery of humanitarian aid. Food prices are skyrocketing, driving affordable meals out of reach for millions of families. Since the start of the crisis, in March 2024 #WFP reached over 510,000 people across the country, providing hot meals, food distributions, cash disbursements and school meals. WFP’s efforts to decentralize its supply chain by prioritizing local purchases allowed it to continue the delivery of food to vulnerable people at a critical time, with very limited access. Though, at current rates, without shipments of fresh WFP supplies into the country, our stocks in Port-au-Prince are at risk of running out by the end of April.
🚨Devastating floods struck northeastern #Afghanistan on May 10-11, impacting 18 districts across 3 provinces. Baghlan province suffered the most, with 83% of recorded deaths. In a region already grappling with severe hunger, these #floods have destroyed the primary source of income: agriculture. This disaster is one of the many floods that have hit the area in just two weeks. 📦 WFP is actively distributing food to help those in dire need.
🚨Eastern Africa floods Emergency. After several years of drought, climate shocks are yet again impacting food security across Eastern Africa. Recent heavy rains and floods in the region have displaced 250.000 people and affected half a million. WFP is providing critical logistics to governments and humanitarian partners, by transporting relief items in hard-to-reach areas. WFP is preparing to provide food and nutrition assistance to over 200K flood affected people, in #Burundi, #Kenya and #Somalia. 🔺 In Burundi, WFP is supporting people affected with cash-based transfers 🔺 In Kenya, WFP is providing emergency cash transfers and supporting the government to deliver food and non-food items to flooded areas 🔺 In Somalia, WFP is providing cash transfers and early warning messages before the floods occur, as part of an anticipatory action programme
