#ad I drove 1500 miles to the Florida Keys looking to land my first monster tarpon. In my first hour on the water i encountered another legendary prehistoric fish that i had all but given up on seeing in my lifetime. The critically endangered sawfish, both native species are extinct in my homestate of Texas. In total shock i inched closer to its 11-12 foot of lenght and likely 300-400 pounds of weight only to realize my worse nightmare. It was being effected by something i had been following devoloping in the keys known are spinning fish syndrome. There are people who are much smarter than I who can explain exactly what it is, and the top suspected reasons its happeneing to you if you would like to educate yourself further on what is known currently about it. This happened on 3/25/24 near Geiger key Florida. I did contact FWC and sat watching the sawfish for close to 20 minutes when it suddenly and gracefully slipped back into deeper water. Sawfish are and will always be one of my favroite fish species my heart is heavy for the fish effected by spinning fish syndrome in the Keys i hope whatever is causing it is resolved soon. No one really told me to be careful of lead exposure when i was kid putting split shots on with my teeth. Lead is super dangerous stuff i would recomend limiting your exposure to it as much as possible. This method may well be worth using if your fishing method requires large lead weights such as sturgeon fishing, swordfishing, shark fishing ect. #fishing #swordfishing #sharkfishing #sturgeonfishing #fishingeducation
