The number one tip when working with clients that feel shy in photos and believe they are awkward in front of the camera is to guide (the key word) them into relaxing their body. I only had 5-10 minutes with each stylist for their headshots so in that time it’s not realistic for me to focus on their belief. Even though it’s that belief and their past experiences that reinforces their tendencies in front of the camera and therefore how they feel. Ex.) if you believe you’re awkward in front of the camera reinforced by your past experiences of seeing photos you don’t like of yourself, you’ll be nervous and your body will tense up (maybe even throw up a peace sign and a cheesy smile) But we have to know that as much as our belief influences our thoughts, feelings, and actions - it can be the other way around. Our body can influence how we feel, how we think and what we believe to be true. That’s why understanding posing as not only body language, but as a way to embody the person we want to be is so important to me. Not only to understand but for me to feel it to then be able to guide someone else into it. So to photographers watching, this is why learning how to feel embodied is so important if you want to create a safe space for whoever you’re photographing. For those wanting to pose better in photos, this should be your foundation! Feeling before seeing. Don’t focus on what your angles and triangles are, focus on how you can feel grounded in your body and the present moment ❤️
