During a recent cleanup off the coast of Pabuwahan Beach, Bali, we found a fully grown olive ridley sea turtle trapped inside a mattress and struggling to survive. The turtle was almost on the verge of suffocation so our cleanup team immediately jumped into action, fetched it out of the mattress, and carefully removed the plastic entangled around its head. The turtle seemed too exhausted to survive on its own, with numb flippers and half-closed eyes. The crew helped it recover by letting it rest in the boat for half an hour. Thanks to the quick action of Nur Wahyudi (the crew member who saw the turtle) we were able to rescue, rehabilitate, and release it back into a cleaner environment. The olive ridley sea turtle was humorously named Alexa, after 4ocean founder @alexjschulze. Six turtle species are endangered, facing severe threats from plastic pollution and poaching daily. The threat of entanglement to turtles is underestimated, as they often suffer internal injuries and starvation from ingesting plastics. Today’s World Wildlife Day, and we have a story to celebrate! 🐥 A few weeks ago our Bali River team tumbled upon an unexpected sight - 2 ducks amidst the chaos of plastic pollution. Sugik, one of our fearless cleanup members, sprang into action, rescuing these feathered friends from the clutches of waste. Every year, over 300,00 dolphins, whales, and porpoises get killed by ghost nets and plastic pollution. As bycatch continues to endanger the lives of sea animals, in East Java, 4ocean's Bali team came up with a brilliant idea to repurpose ghost nets into a trash collector. Our team retrieved discarded fishing nets, repaired them, and added buoys so they could install them in the water. The best part is that the repurposed buoys extend in a line across rivers, stopping floating plastic debris on its way to the ocean. The following day, heaps of floating plastic were collected by the net! This simple and innovative solution is a hopeful reminder that it’s never too late to care for our oceans and rivers.
