Stories of Survival: Journey Journey 🐴 was traveling in a trailer that was carrying 29 horses to slaughter when it wrecked on the interstate. She was one of the lucky 15 survivors transported to @Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri. She avoided any major injuries from the crash, but most importantly, she avoided a cruel, inhumane death at an out-of-country horse slaughterhouse. With minimal wounds and support from staff and volunteers, she was able to trust people easily, and it was soon discovered that Journey was pregnant when she was on the slaughter-bound trailer. Ten months later, Journey gave birth to a foal named Cruiser. Once Cruiser was weaned, Journey was evaluated and made available for adoption! Journey now lives a happy life with another adopted horse, Chuck, and three human children. Journey is just one example of a fantastic horse who was slaughter-bound. A Big Dog with an Even Bigger Heart: Maggio’s Story ❤️ In April 2022, Maggio was one of the biggest - if not THE biggest - dogs we have ever seen at any ASPCA facility. Maggio weighed 137 lb. and was a gentle giant. He was one of nearly 30 dogs we assisted the @New York City Police Dept. in removing from filthy conditions in Brooklyn. After transporting the dogs into our care, our experts conducted forensic exams, provided much-needed medical care and behavioral treatment & enrichment. Finding a dog of his size a home proved challenging, but Maggio gained attention through newsletters, media, social media and more, ultimately leading to his new loving home. Thousands of dogs, like Maggio, are now in warm, safe and comfortable homes thanks to our partnership with the NYPD! 2024 marks our 10th anniversary of this lifesaving collaboration, and we are proud to be celebrating 10 years of giving vulnerable animals in New York City the second chances they deserve. While the NYPD enforces animal cruelty laws and responds to the calls of animal cruelty and subsequent criminal investigations, we provide forensic support, medical care, behavior assessment, housing and placement, operational support, legal and investigative support to help the investigation and provide special training to police officers. Together, we've helped over 5,000 animals and instructed over 28,000 members of the police department in animal cruelty investigations - allowing them to have the ability to not only respond to cases, but to recognize animal crimes or suspected animal cruelty. "This groundbreaking and lifesaving partnership has had an unprecedented, positive effect on thousands of animal cruelty victims throughout New York City's five boroughs," says Adrian Ashby, Lieutenant Commander, NYPD Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad. Suspected Dogfighting Survivor Goes from Harrowing Past to Heartwarming Home ❤️ In honor of #NationalDogfightingAwarenessDay, we are sharing Mila's story, a suspected dogfighting survivor. In July 2022, Mila was brought to the ASPCA Cruelty Recovery Center (CRC), in Ohio, after being rescued from a suspected dogfighting operation. Upon arrival, our staff noticed she had an "awkward gait," and was taken to see a veterinary orthopedic specialist. The specialist revealed she had severe trauma in her back left leg that required surgery. A month later Mila had the surgery, marking the beginning of her recovery journey, supported by our dedicated team at the CRC. After months of healing, she increased her muscle strength in that leg and began to walk and play normally again! Since 2010, the ASPCA has assisted with 300+ dogfighting cases in at least 24 states and has positively impacted through rescue, consultations and investigations nearly 6,000 victims of dogfighting. Our staff is diligent when working with suspected dogfighting survivors and assesses both their medical and behavior conditions to provide them with the best possible outcome. “Sometimes these dogs are locked away in areas and only pulled out for the [dogfighting] activity, so they’re not properly socialized,” Jessi, Senior Manager of Animal Behavior at the CRC tells us. Mila, however, exhibited very minimal fear and loved other dogs! Our Placement team remained determined to find her a loving home, and in February 2023, Mila’s luck turned when Ashley found her on the Petfinder website. When they met at the CRC, Ashley knew Mila was the one by Mila's playful energy! Rescued from horrific conditions, dogs like Mila simply desire a place to rest their heads and to be loved unconditionally. Yet, far too often, unfair bias and misconceptions keep these dogs in shelters, waiting for someone to see that they’re more than just their past.
