“But he knows you” as if that means he wouldn’t still bite 😂. Yes, he knows me well, I’ve worked with him 17 years, he knows I’m not a threat so he doesn’t have to be defensive, and he knows my training and that he gets treats, BUT that doesn’t make it “safe” or get rid of his predatory instincts. I’ve explained many times, they’re alligators, not Labradors, they are NEVER pets and should never be thought of as anything close to one. They’re trained, not tame. Alligator brains are wired completely different from any mammal, never expect a gator to act like like any mammal. My best example of this is at one park I worked at there was male and female together, mated up and everything, together since the 90s. Male much larger and could easily kill her if he wanted to of course, never harmed her. Then one day while I was there she had a seizure, and the moment she flipped over he was eating her, like within seconds. It was nighttime when our Kaluku Operations Room received the call: a large elephant stuck in mud. A recumbent elephant is easy pickings for poachers or predators. Leaving him unaccompanied overnight was out of the question. Encountering the Elusive Leopard: A Remarkable Experience Have you ever dreamt of witnessing the power and grace of leopards in their natural habitat? Through habituation efforts, we’re fortunate to observe these magnificent creatures up close, with minimal disruption to their natural behavior. This allows us to witness their fascinating courtship rituals, including the remarkable frequency of mating during the initial stages. Here’s a captivating fact: male leopards have specialized male appendage with spikes on it that induce ovulation in females, leading to frequent mating (every 15 minutes!) for up to 5 days. This frequency gradually slows down as the process continues. Witnessing these majestic animals in their natural environment is a humbling experience. See if you can spot the two sharks I am concerned about…it’s not for the reason most people think I would or should be concerned about getting in with sharks… Most people probably think I mean I’m concerned with their behavior for my own safety, and that is a very crucial and relevant thing to constantly be aware of around other animals (human-animals included 😉 cause statistically they are very dangerous 😉) but in this situation, as I note additional safety considerations I am factoring in, what I am really concerned about is their wellbeing. Yes, I am worried for the sharks lives because of humans. The human impact seen from fishing gear on these two sharks is potentially life threatening. The one shark with the large oversized hook and jaw broken open from trying to struggle away from that hook and line will sadly likely die from slowly starving. This is heartbreaking as the suffering is prolonged and also has other potential negative implications as this animal becomes desperate for nourishment it may become so desperate as to go after things that are not its natural prey item. The other shark with the long trailing fishing gear could roll (as Galapagos sharks do naturally in bait balls as a hunting strategy, or during mating) and become entangled or wrapped with this line which can lead to gill or fin damage, again leading to a potential shortened lifespan and also constant and progressive suffering. I hate animal cruelty, I wish there was more I could do to help and at least for the shark with the long trailing line I attempted to dive down and cut it as short as possible as we do daily with the team and wonderful people who join and support @OneOceanDiving but sadly for the one with the large hook and broken jaw there isn’t anything we can do to fix his jaw. The hook will likely not rust out before he starves, unless he’s able to find already dead fish which is most likely found on baited hooks or closer to shore in nets, on the reef, or in fishing harbors all of which present potential additional hazards. Dinosaur roars. Casper is actually not roaring, but bellowing, a form of alligator communication that most people perceive as threatening but in actuality is him looking for love!! Alligators bellow to convey health and size information to surrounding gators for breeding, social, and territorial reasons. They bellow year round but with much more frequency in the breeding season. The sound emitted directly correlates to the gator’s size, providing an accurate size estimate to whoever is listening(and knows what to listen for!)When male alligators bellow, the powerful low frequency sound waves actually cause the water over their backs to bounce up, creating a “water dance” as you can see in these photos. Female bellows do not have this affect. And speaking of dinosaur roars, the roaring of the T. rex in Jurassic Park is a conglomeration of animal sounds, part of which includes gator bellowing! ~~~If you enjoy the video, PLEASE SHARE!! We talk a lot about gators being able to regrow their teeth and cycling through several thousand in a lifetime, but they can also lose this ability if the root of the tooth is damaged! Spalshin’ and snappin’! Casper reacting to splashes at the surface. When he is underwater he often puts his nictitating membrane up, which limits his vision, and he reacts much more to movement and sound. He will snap at anything that moves underwater like this, making him much more dangerous when submerged. Most his snaps are really sweeps, slower moving and feeling for something, but sometimes he will be quick! Sadly some states still allow the sale of baby gators as pets; most these animals don’t survive their first few years, and those that do usually develop horrible disfigurements from metabolic bone disease.
