We start seeding our tomatoes around March, we are in zone5b. The timing for starting tomato seeds is often determined by the last frost date in your area. As a general rule, start your tomato seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the expected last frost date. You can also search for a planting calendar online that is more specific to your area. SEED STARTING MEDIUM: Coco coir is produced from the husk of coconuts. On its own it does not contain any nutrients. So when the seedlings start to grow you will need to apply liquid fertilizer. To avoid this, mix coco coir with worm castings or compost. 1:1 ratio Seed starting mix is also a good option, it will have everything you need. UP-POTTING & GROWING INDOORS For the best growth, use a grow light or a sunny window with about 6-8 hours of daylight. Seedlings can be up-potted when 2-4 true leaves appear. True leaves are the second set of leaves that appear after the initial seed leaves. The pot size we use is about four to six inches. INDOOR TO OUTDOOR TRANSITION: Whenever you’re growing indoor plants and are introducing them into the outdoor elements, the plants need to be hardened. This process will slowly acclimate the plants to the outdoor environment. Start by placing the seedlings outdoors when it’s free from frost. 1-2 days in full shade Another 1-2 either morning or late afternoon sun Then 1-2 afternoon sun. Afterwards, they can be transplanted into their final spot. By doing this, it will reduce leaf burn and strengthen your tomato plants. Water tomatoes consistently, and fertilize monthly with compost. We use a handful of organic chicken manure because it is high in calcium and we never have blossom end rot on our tomatoes. We wish I knew how important this step was when I first started growing from seeds indoors. We must admit, the first time we grew tomatoes indoors, we directly exposed the plants to the outdoor sun, they didn’t make it. Lesson learned, and we found out about an important step called “Plant Hardening” There are many steps to do this, some even recommend to expose your plants for only an hour for the first day. But it can be time consuming to keep moving plants inside and outside each day. Eventually, we ended up using a tarp and changed our process. Instead of constantly moving the plant, we kept them in one spot and placed a tarp over them. This saved us time and only brought the plants inside if there is an unexpected frost warning. This process takes about a week but worth it to keep your plants healthy before they can be planted in their final spot. This works for any plants grown indoors and needs to be transplanted outdoors. Just make sure to do this process when the weather is warm and safe from frost. Days 1-2 Keep the plants under full shade Days 3-4 Expose the plants under morning or late afternoon sun. Sun rays during these times are not as strong. Day 5 Check to see how the plants are transitioning, such as signs of sun burn. If it needs more time, continue to expose only to morning and afternoon shade. If the plant is looking greener, then start exposing to full sun. Days 6-7 Expose the plants under full sun. Water well during this process and open air helps them adjust much faster. After this process, they can now be transplanted in their final spot. #fypシ #gardentok #garden
