From birthday joy to burnout… this week reminded me how quickly things can change when you live with a chronic illness. It started with so much love, I celebrated my birthday surrounded by family, shared laughs, and received the most thoughtful gifts. I am so grateful to have such an amazing family 🥹 But as the week went on, my body began to crash. I’m overdue for my B12 injection, and because I don’t absorb vitamins and minerals like most people, my energy and strength have taken a big hit. Thankfully, it’s finally booked for next week. Our mornings start early and slow. My 10-year-old daughter has holoprosencephaly and cerebral palsy, so most of the work in the morning falls on me—but I’ve learned to find beauty in the routine. First, we cuddle in bed for a few quiet minutes. Then I lift her out, change her, and help her get dressed in something soft and wheelchair-friendly. I carry her to the kitchen, get her breakfast ready, and while she eats, I rush to throw on makeup, change into clothes, and pack up anything we need for the day. Next comes brushing her hair, picking a bow, putting on her shoes (which sometimes takes longer than it should), and then it’s time to get her into her wheelchair. I load the chair into the car, buckle her in, double-check our bags, and off we go to school. It’s a lot—physically and emotionally—but it’s our life. And there’s joy in the small moments: her smile when I do her hair, the way she leans in for a morning hug, and the quiet peace of spring sunlight coming through the window. Theme parks are meant to be fun — but what if just getting on a ride feels like an obstacle course? I had a great day at @Alton Towers Resort and wanted to bring you along as part of my Beyond Limits series, but there were definitely some barriers that made the experience harder than it needed to be as a wheelchair user. Transferring into the ride vehicles was one of the biggest challenges — the high sides made it really difficult. In the U.S., I went on rides with flip-down side panels that become transfer boards, separate boarding areas so you can take your time getting on or transfer aids that could be used to bump down to lower ride vehicles. That kind of design would make a massive difference here- and I think it’s definitely do-able! The app also kept directing us through inaccessible routes, which ate up a lot of our time just figuring out how to get around. (Went flying out my chair at one point 🤣😅) If you have access needs, that’s something to be really aware of. Before going, I was told I’d only be able to go on two rides because of limb-pressure requirements — but on the day, the operators were great and let me on all of them as long as I could transfer independently. There were a few near misses with the transfers and my arms were definitely aching the next day but it was so worth it. Big thank you to all the workers at the park who made my day as enjoyable as possible!! So grateful for the fun — but accessibility shouldn’t be a bonus. It should be built-in. My car broke down on a busy, dangerous road a few months ago and I had no way of getting out so had to call the Police to come rescue me as I was obstructing traffic. Two police officers from Warwickshire police were there in minutes, stopped the traffic, helped me transfer into the passenger seat and then one of them drove my car to a lay-by (with the foot pedals) I then plugged the handset in and after problem solving what was going on, we realised it worked when plugged in so must be a battery issue. Come with me to get the battery replaced so that I can use my adaptive accelerator without needing it to be plugged in. There are so many adaptive solutions to make driving possible for disabled people out there and this one works really well for me as it gives my right hand the freedom to assist my left hand on the steering wheel. As with all equipment, it can fail, but hopefully replacing the battery has now solved that issue 🤞 #ComeWithMe #DITL #WheelchairGirl

We got this new bath chair for our daughter with cerebral palsy and holoprosencephaly and it is a game changer for my back 👏🏻 The best part was that it was covered by insurance (Disability Medicaid covered all of it!), and it only took three months to come in which seems like an anomaly in the seating and mobility world. HELP! I’m down to zero fully-working limbs now 😭 Let this be a lesson for all of us… Start off slowly at the gym and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts instead of trying to do too much too soon, especially if you’re a beginner of disabled, like me; prioritise proper form and learning the equipment before pushing yourself to the limit and potentially injuring yourself. DON’T FORGET TO WARM UP! Thank goodness for my wax therapy bath, it saved me!! All my Ehlers Danlos family; we are at a significantly higher risk of developing tendonitis due to the inherent joint hypermobility which weakens the connective tissue in tendons, making them more prone to inflammation and injury from overuse or repetitive motions; essentially, the loose connective tissue in EDS can lead to unstable joints and increased strain on tendons, causing tendonitis. SEVEN TIMES I have reported to the staff of this @Next store that the aisles are extremely narrow, some I cannot even go down. STILL nothing has been done, they don’t even offer to help most times, just laugh and give me some excuse like “haha yeah we have a lot of stock out at the moment”, “the store has had a big move around because we have some sale items still in”, “haha yeah I know, sorry about that”… on all occasions, I have just put the items that I was looking at back and left the store, I feel discriminated against and not listened to; almost like they don’t want my custom. Once I couldn’t even get to the till, the area was so cluttered with rails and display shelving, the aisles were not wide enough to get down. It’s important to note that it isn’t just this retailer, there are so many that don’t consider those with disabilities and access needs (and pushchairs!) when arranging the layout of their shop floor. This isn’t just an oversight, I have reported this MANY times, over many months. WHY are we not thought about? WHY are we not listened to? WHY do you not want us to shop in your stores? Myself and many other disabled women are REFUSED access to smear tests, as our doctors surgeries FAIL to make reasonable adjustments. EVERY woman between 25 and 64 has a right to get the cervical screening! 📣 The NHS puts £175m into the cervical screening programme every year, 📣 Each missed (or in my case wasted) appointment costs the NHS £261, 📣 88% of disabled women surveyed by Jo's Cervical Cancer Charity said it was hard to attend or access cervical screenings, 📣 63% of disabled women surveyed by Jo's Cervical Cancer Charity said they were unable to attend due to their disability, 📣 If a cervical screening is missed and abnormal cells develop into cancer, the cost of treating cervical cancer can be significant, ranging from £1379 (stage 1) to £19,261 (Stage 2 or later) per person, 📣 According to google a hydraulic/height adjustable treatment table ranges from £280-£1200. Who else has struggled to sleep in this heat? Can’t wait for my extension to be done as I plan on fitting an air con unit in there 🙌 Somehow forgot to post this on here yesterday 🙃 This weeks (last week) High 5’s: 🖐️ Bob and I travelled to London for a court case… it didn’t quite go to plan and I need to return later this year. I can’t really discuss what it’s for yet but I feel it’s really important for me (and the disability community) to seek justice ⚖️ 🖐️ I went for another vitamin and mineral infusion and I am already feeling some of the benefits ❤️‍🩹 🖐️ Had an interview with local radio about my negative smear test experience and how GP surgeries aren’t always accessible to disabled people. I felt this was REALLY important to raise awareness about so was grateful to be given that voice. I look forward to hearing the interview soon (hopefully next week) 📻 🖐️ I had a power cut- obviously this wasn’t a high but it made me reflect on how fortunate I am to have access to electricity, hot water, internet and a phone. I am grateful that it is back on now and next week I need to invest in a torch incase it ever happens again. 🔦 🖐️ I had a lovely outing to Seaton with Bob and we enjoyed some ice cream on the sea front.
