Women were not allowed to eat at restaurants alone until protesters & activists organized, disrupted establishments, & upended the status quo! Here are two crucial events: 1. In 1869, Jane Cunningham Croly created #sorosis which was the first professional women’s club in the US & organized a group of women to go eat at the iconic #Delmonicos in NYC. They ate without being accompanied by any men! 2. In 1969, Betty Friedan led a group of women into the Oak Room in NYC to protest the restaurant’s “no women” policy. Women had to gain the freedom to eat alone at restaurants! As we know, today women & gender nonconforming folks continue to fight for rights, like ab0rtion/healthcare rights. #womenhistorymonth #internationalwomensday #foodforthought #phoga #vietnamesefood

3. So that w h i t e people will pause, stutter, or struggle when they first try to pronounce my name 2. To honor my parents 1. To be close to my Vietnameseness I was so inspired by a Black poet named Porsha Olayiwola who wrote a poem about Black names entitled “Unnamed”. Porsha described names as a “historical leash” to attach those in the present day to their past oppress0rs. Their existence today is evidence of the resilience of their ancestors. In this video, my parents are performing the final offerring to our ancestors to bid them farewell and to welcome the new year of the dragon. The song is Phien Gac Dem Xuan sung by Thanh Thuy. #vietnamese #names #tet #vietnamesenewyear @Tien Thuy @briana grogan 🍉

My parents are across the world away from their homeland. They’re watching new year celebrations on you-tube as they prepare to celebrate the new year here in California. I’m not sure if they are wishing to be back home, but here’s the home they’ve created. It’s not luxurious in material goods, but it is filled with their culture. #tết is the most important celebration in #Vietnam & among Vietnamese diasporas. This year is the year of the dragon, officially on Feb 10. So, on Feb 9, my parents performed a ritual (feast offering & prayer) to welcome our ancestors & the new year. Here’s what they presented to our ancestors (keep in mind it’s truly the thoughts &prayers & good intentions that matter most): 1. Flowers including chrysanthemums & sword lilies 2. Various fruits including watermelon 🍉 bumpy apples, pineapples, coconuts, tangerines 🍊, green Thai bananas, papaya 3. Dried fruit candies aka #mứctết & lotus cakes 4. #banhchung #banhtet which symbolize the land & the country Vietnam & pickled carrots and daikon 5. Rice & 🥖 & fish sauce & Vietnamese ham 6. Various dishes that include beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, fish 7. 6 bowls & 6 pairs of chopsticks 8. Incense for prayer 🙏 This offering is performed at various hours depending on the specific family, but it’s usually performed before the sunset. Once the sun sets, we perform a farewell offering. The year of the dragon is inspiring and magical because the dragon is a mythical creature. There’s hope for community unity to bring about liberation 🍉🐉🪷🙏🧧#chúcmừngnămmới #vietnamesefood #yearofthedragon
