Post Jump Rope Dynamic Stretching - age 55, February 1, 2024, 5:23 pm 🌺CAUTION: THIS VIDEO IS FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY. THIS EXERCISE CAN BE DANGEROUS. PLEASE VIEW WITH DISCRETION. My workout today was 1 minute of jump rope + 30 seconds rest + 1 minute of push ups x 5 rounds / 14.5 minutes. I posted the unedited and probably boring video to FitPro Hawaii on YouTube under the title “Jump Rope and Push Ups”. I don’t select what I post on a given day according to how many views, likes, or follows it will get, and today’s video is an example of that. It was rainy and I couldn’t wear a microphone, and even if I could, I was choking so badly I couldn’t talk anyway. I had to jump rope because the circulation to my calves and feet is impaired by nerve damage I incurred from chemotherapy I received to treat stage 3 colon cancer in 2012, so my calves were so tight they were curling my toes. I’ve also learned that when my calves and other muscles get tight, it’s because I haven’t used them enough to unload the accumulated budget of energy they’re loaded with every night while I sleep. If I go too many days without spending this evolutionary budget, all that potential energy backs up into the muscles and no amount of stretching or manual therapy can remove it, as well it shouldn’t. For me, nothing burns that tension out of my calves and body better than jumping rope and push ups. When I was done, I threw a few kicks and rolled my shoulders out. Now I’m inside and about to eat potato skins with my crew. Much aloha 🥔

Double 12 kg./26 lbs. Kettlebell Jump Swing - age 55, January 8, 2024, 1:39 pm 🌺CAUTION: THIS VIDEO IS FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY. THIS EXERCISE CAN BE DANGEROUS. My knees are not what they used to be, but I still practice controlled, symmetrical jumps and landings as often as I can. Often times stability and exercises that can improve it are demonstrated as slow, meticulous expressions into exaggerated ranges of motions or static positions under ponderous loads, and these are fine and necessary. When I practice these myself, I am always aware and grateful for the time I have to fit and maneuver myself into these exercises, which gives the many systems involved adequate warning as to what’s to come. However, of the few times I’ve broken myself against this planet, most happened at a very high velocity in a short span of distance, and in these instances my conventionally trained stabilizers were not in time to help. In fairness, those events might not have been within the purpose nor capacity of said stabilizers, but knowing that is why I train to explosively move and decelerate my body mass. Generating and absorbing explosive movement requires the nervous system to organize the systems involved in milliseconds, and doing this on a regular basis builds a type of reactive armor wherein as shock waves enter the body, they are sorted and distributed by the nervous system to structures ahead in a way that the force can be dissipated and even recycled into another expression. Even though I’m not breaking any records here, this training I do in small doses keeps me agile, reactive, and DURABLE, and this aging guy needs all I can get of those vital attributes. I normally train barefoot, but I’ve got to be sensible with this one due to the extreme forces it imposes on me so I’m wearing @vivobarefoot Hydra ESC amphibious trail shoes. I jump a lot when wearing them hiking on the Hawaii trails, and these shoes are built for taking the hits in my behalf, so I wear them for this as well. Much aloha🌴

45 lbs./20 kg. Infinity Lunge - age 55, January 6, 2024, 6:04 pm Since I got home from Japan on January 4, I’ve been paying for my circadian and dietary sins more than expected. I feel swollen and groggy, yet I can’t sleep when I try to. My knees, back and shoulders are very stiff, and I’m clumsy and sore going up and down the stairs. Fortunately and unfortunately, I’ve felt like this many times in the past, and on these days I choose the Infinity Lunge. This exercise shoves me into everything I don’t want to do, and in doing so it acts as a hard restart to my mind and body. Orbiting the plate around my head imposes a 360° “joystick” effect on my shoulders and core before it tries to pull me sideways off my base as I split my stance into the lunge. As the plate accelerates off the drop, I have to use both legs, rotational core, and a counter rotating upper body in unison to decelerate the weight before it blows me off my feet. If that goes well, a synchronized push off the back leg segueing into a push of the front helps the obliques wind the plate up and across to the opposite shoulder to then repeat the process. Today I am wearing the @vivobarefoot weightlifting shoe, the Motus Strength because stabilizing the length and circumference of a 45 lbs. accelerating disc was too much for my normally bare feet. The Motus provided the lateral stability I needed to withstand the lateral force vectors inherent in this exercise, but the wide toe box and flat, pliable sole allowed my toes and ankles the space they needed to react to these forces. Coming back from 13 straight days of no exercise and tons of ramen noodles, cakes and mochi is going to be a process, so it was nice to have the assistance I needed today. I hope the new year is being kind to you. Much aloha 🎊
