Home of BLACKBEARD the Pirate and FIRST Town in NC? 🏴‍☠️🏘️ - Southern History Series part 6! Did you know that the small port town of Bath, NC is known as the home of Blackbeard? This beautiful town is rich with so much history, and it is also North Carolina’s oldest incorporated town as well! From 1705 until 1722, Bath was the first capital of North Carolina before permanent government institutions were established in New Bern! In 1705, this area was incorporated as the town of Bath, and this land sits right on Bath Creek that leads to the Pamlico River. Here you can find the oldest church building in the state of North, Carolina constructed in 1734 which is St. Thomas Church, and Bath did house the first public library in the colony founded in 1700! Some more on Blackbeard: Edward Teach was his real name, and he was a notorious English pirate in the Caribbean Sea during the 18th century. It is said he lived in Bath in 1718 with a royal pardon, and later died in Ocracoke, NC! Now, many years onward, he is one of the most well known pirate names ever! Now, the towns population is 249 (as of 2010), and it is carefully curated to hold its historic roots. Did you know the ONLY remaining shell shaped gas station is in North Carolina?! ⛽️👀 Southern history series part 8!! The Shell Service Station in Winston-Salem, NC is a former filling station built in the 1930s and is the only one remaining! It was a decision originally decided by the local Shell distributor to create brand awareness in the Winston-Salem area. There were at least 8 different giant shell stations built to resemble a massive scallop shell designed to attract customers. This shell station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in May of 1976 and now you can visit it today! They have so many delicious options to choose from, and one of our new favorites is now their Brisket Burger 👀 This is 100% brisket and made from the trimmings of their smoked brisket, and it is sooooo good! Another newer option we had was their Chicago-Styled Smoked Italian Beef Sandwich! This is a MASSIVE sandwich fit for any hungry person, and it comes on a fresh French roll, loaded with homemade giardiniera toppings and dipped in Au Jus sauce!
