Our 2023 Impact Report comes out in a few minutes! Cleaning rivers is only half of the work we do at Sungai Watch. We bring the trash we collect to one of our 7 waste processing facilities, where we sort the waste into 30 different material categories. Before recycling the sorted trash, we gather as much data about the waste collected. We analyze and record data to fuel conversations around plastic pollution with stakeholders. In 2023, we increased our data collection efforts to double our sample size of individual pieces of plastic audited to 537,189 pieces of plastic analyzed, bringing our total number to over 1 million items since 2020. Through this data, we hope to drive the conversation around how to improve single use plastic packaging and placing the responsibility to manufacturers and governments. Keep an eye out for our 2023 Impact Report launching soon on our website and across social media.
Plastic bags is the type of plastic that we find the most of in Indonesia’s rivers. From the 844,936 kg of trash collected in 2023, 36% of it was plastic bags. We are very excited to be up-cycling these bags through @sungaidesign into long lasting products. From a problem to possibility — A testament to show that we can protect our planet, one up-cycled plastic bag at a time.
