This is syncopation and it's simple in principle, but difficult to execute. Rakim's rap flow on 'It's Been a Long Time' is a quintessential example of the flavourful swing feel that defined much of 90's era Boom Bap. But what actually is swing? Many confuse it with another popular rhythmic technique used in this era - microtiming. Swing's defining characteristic is the result the displacement of 'off-beat' note subdivisions. It has its origin in a style of late 20's Jazz music, performed primarily by Big Band and Jazz Orchestras. This is in contrast to microtiming, which is the general term for the micro displacement of notes (both on-beat and off-beat) from the grid. The careful injection of swing into rap flow can add much needed funk and bounce to a track. When delivered by the most skilled MC's, it becomes difficult for any listener to sit still. #musictheory #rapscience #mazbouq

"Ninkasi" is now available to the world ! It's an adaptation of a hymn dedicated to goddess Ninkasi, recounting the stages in the brewing process. The text is written in Sumerian, a language spoken at least 4900 years ago (2900 BC) in Mesopotamia. It was also one of the first script to appear. The Hymn to Ninkasi consists of two songs engraved on clay tablets dating from the 18th century BC. The first song describes step by step the process of brewing Sumerian beer. The second describes the vessels in which the beer is brewed and served. All this is done by the goddess herself This song is based on a 11:4 polyrythm on frame drum loop, with throat singing. It's the second part of the triptych after "H₃rḗḱs Dei̯u̯ós-kwe". I humbly try to pronounce it to the best I can, with several months of studying phonology and phonetic of Sumerian. 7/12 technically isn’t a real time signature but it's an effective conceptual framework for what’s going on in this rap flow. 1/8th note triplets (or quaver triplets) are technically 1/12th notes, and this rap flow is based on 7 of them. There are valid alternative ways to frame this - one would be that this is a polytempo scenario with 7/8 being rapped on top of 4/4 at 1.5x the tempo. Rapping in quintuplets (5's) is particularly challenging for those of us who grew up listening to mainly western music where odd / prime number subdivisions are non-standard. It's unlikely to come naturally for us. Even when writing this flow, I kept having to check I wasn't slipping into double time triplets / sextuplets (6's), as they sound similar and what we hear a lot of in Hip hop.
