Credit to @slash Credit to @thelegendsofmusic Pantera performing “Cowboys From Hell” Live at the Monsters of Rock Festival in 1992 in Italy⁣ This was the record that turned Pantera from a local sensation to a national phenomenon. It was the record that established their iconic brand of groove metal, but more importantly established their credibility as a group. Prior to the recording sessions for this album, the band were turned down by almost every record label in this country. In the end they were approached by Atco Records representative Mark Ross who had watched them perform at a show in Texas. That performance impressed him so much that he pushed to get the band signed to a contract. Years later in an interview, Ross had this to say about the concert: “”By the end of the first song, my jaw was on the floor. The sonic power of it all — the attitude and the musicianship — blew me away. Basically, you had to be an idiot to not think they’re amazing. I mean, how could you see these guys and not think, ‘Holy shit!’?”. Initially the producer the band chose for this record was Max Norman who had worked with Ozzy Osbourne on “Blizzard of Ozz”, “Diary of A Madman”, and “Speak of the Devil”. Instead he passed up on the opportunity to produce Lynch Mob’s debut album Wicked Sensation instead. After this, Pantera drafted Terry Date who had worked with Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, and Overkill. As it turns out, Overkill’s record “The Years of Decay” strongly influenced Dimebag Darrell’s guitar tone. This was also the record that influenced their change from Glam Metal to Thrash/Groove Metal. ⁣ Here’s a quote from Vinnie Paul about the album: “Cowboys is where everybody came into their own, along with the full-blown Pantera sound. That was actually the first song we wrote for the record. Basically it was about us coming out of Texas and being out of place. Two movies out of the three (A Hard Days Night & Help!) were completed and both parties agreed that an animated movie would complete their obligations. The band chose it because it would reduce their involvement, but they agreed to record four new songs for the film. Only one side of the album contains songs performed by the Beatles; of the six, two of them were previously released, this includes “Yellow Submarine” and “All You Need is Love”. Of the original tracks, the first to be recorded was Harrison’s “Only a Northern Song”, which was taped in February 1967 but rejected for inclusion on Sgt. Pepper. After that came “All Together Now” followed by Harrison’s “It’s All Too Much”. The last original song recorded was John Lennon’s “Hey Bulldog”. George Martin also created an orchestral score, which was recorded with a 41-piece orchestra. In some of his arrangements, Martin referenced his past work with the Beatles; for example, “Sea of Time” includes what Ian MacDonald terms “an affectionate quotation” from the Indian-styled “Within You Without You”, from Sgt. Pepper and “Yellow Submarine in Pepperland” reprises the film’s title track. In “Sea of Monsters”, Martin included the beginning of Bach’s Air on the G String, while in other songs he parodies works by Russian composer Stravinsky. Despite the fact that the movie received its worldwide premiere in London in July 1968, the release of the soundtrack was delayed so it wouldn’t clash with the release of “The White Album”. In a 1976 interview with the band for *Sounds*  magazine, their guitarist Malcolm Young prodded Scott to tell the story about "the fat one." Scott explained that backstage at a show in Australia, a rotund woman they called "Big Bertha" came forward when he asked, "Who wants it?" Too frightened to refuse, he did the deed with Bertha, who then called to her friend, "that's the 37th this month," and produced a black book where she recorded her conquests. Scott turned the incident into a song, this time naming the woman "Rosie." During the band’s early days they all shared a house in Australia where lots of unsavory incidents occurred. This gave them material for songs like this one and "The Jack.” According to the other members of the band Bon had a great affection for plus-size women. He occasionally would put his experiences into his lyrics. Another song on the album, "Go Down," mentions Ruby Lips, who is another real person. This is confirmed in the **Let There Be Rock** liner notes. From a musical standpoint there is a longstanding rumor that AC/DC’s music has been inspired by Chuck Berry.
