Maybe the Busiest Beaver award should have gone to this Phyllis instead 😬🏅🦫 Milt Kahl wasn’t without his flaws. He had a terrible temper, and was extremely competitive, always wanting to one-up Phyllis. He was also known to be extremely arrogant. Milt once told Marc Davis that his character Medusa would “wipe his Cruella off the screen.” Obviously that never happened (and *might* be why I included Cruella here 😉). But regardless of her success, Medusa was Milt’s favorite character that he ever created, and he animated all of her scenes personally. Lillian Disney never wanted her husband Walt to have Phyllis involved at the studio. She called her “too flighty” and was afraid she would hurt Walt. But Phyllis did work with George Hurrell in their production company on Disney studio property and they made many TV commercials, some starring Disney characters. Phyllis was known to be a hard-living, chain 💨, abrasive, stubborn, and hard-working woman who loved to 🍸(which was a major point of contention in her marriage to Milt). Disney Animator Jane Baer (who knew both Milt and Phyllis) once said, “Phyllis wore boots. Medusa wore the same boots. In that scene where she’s pulling off the eyelashes, I said, ‘That’s Phyllis. It makes SO much sense why Mickey hasn’t popped the question after that nightmare 😳 Phyllis Bounds was quite a character (we’ll get more into her story later). She was married at one point to George Hurrell and the two of them had a production company called Hurrell Productions that operated on the Disney lot (at least at first). They utilized many Disney artists and resources to produce their television spots. This American Motors 1955 Nash Rambler promo is the only time in Disney history where Mickey and Minnie have kids (Mickey’s Nightmare doesn’t really count because it was a dream sequence). It’s even more confusing when you think about all the care and attention to detail that went into this ride in the 1983 remodel to make it more like the movie. They took the colors for this attraction directly from the cells for the original film and brought in the original voice artists for some of the characters. So why did they change rule 42 to NOT reflect the book or the movie? To be historically accurate, the section with the Queen of Hearts wasn’t added to this attraction until the 1983 remodel. This scene wasn’t included at all in the original 1958 attraction, when Walt was alive. But there are many people who likely remembered this about Walt and Lillian who were still around in 1983, and that’s what makes me think that maybe they added this as a tribute to Walt. It is pure speculation, however, on my behalf, so I don’t want to state it as fact. But I can’t help but think about Walt and Lillian when I see this because it just makes so much sense as a reason why they would change the rule. It wasn’t just croquet that Lillian won against Walt. According to the 1956 Saturday Evening Post article by Diane Disney Miller, “When canasta was the craze, Mother and Dad played until late at night because Dad didn't want to quit until he was ahead. And Mother kept on winning. She won at dominoes too.
